Easy Weeknight Meal

This dish isn’t pretty, but it tastes great. My Mom has been after me for ages to make this recipe.  She loves it. The only problem that I had with the recipe was that it used Golden Mushroom Soup. I am not a big fan of mushrooms.  I can handle the specks that are in a can of Cream of Mushroom, but I still pick out any big chunks. It’s the “plain chicken” in me. I decided to finally give this a try and swap the Golden Mushrooom Soup for Cream of Chicken. It turned out great.

How to Make Slow Cooker Angel Chicken

This chicken is very flavorful and a breeze to make. Place some chicken in a crockpot. Mix together Italian dressing mix, cream cheese, butter, soup, and broth. Pour over the chicken and cook. Boil some water for the pasta when you get home from work and voila! Dinner in 10 minutes!

  • I used boneless chicken breasts. Feel free to use chicken tenders, thighs or breasts.
  • I used a packet of Good Seasonings Italian Dressing Mix. DO NOT make the dressing. Just use the seasoning.
  • Can use any cream of soup you prefer – cream of mushroom, cream of celery, cream of broccoli would all be great. You can also use Golden Mushroom Soup.
  • 98% Fat Free and Healthy Request soups work great in this dish.
  • Feel free to throw in some frozen broccoli or spinach into the crockpot with the chicken.
  • If you are having trouble getting the cream cheese incorporated into the sauce, try heating the Italian dressing mix, cream cheese, butter, soup, and broth on the stove before adding it to the crockpot.
  • Feel free to shred the chicken with 2 forks after cooking. This is a great way to stretch the recipe to serve more people.

  1. I’m going to make this recipe for 8 people. Can I double it? Would you recommend making more sauce as others suggest?
    Thanks!

    1. You can double the recipe by doubling all the ingredients. I made the recipe as written, so I can not say if you need to make more sauce. That would be up to you.

  2. I do not like the pieces of mushroom in the soup either. That’s why I got one of those small blenders, like blendjet. I mainly use it to whiz up cream of mushroom soup. I like the taste and it’s in a lot of recipes.

  3. Do you think it would work to make a crockpot dump meal with this recipe ? I am thinking about combining all ingredients in a freezer bag so that when in a hurry it could just be pulled out of the freezer and dumped in the crockpot but I didn’t know if it might change the consistency of the sauce/gravy.

    1. I would say about 2 pounds – this is a very forgiving recipe. Just use whatever size chicken you have. It will be just fine.

  4. I’m making this for a fellowship luncheon at church. I’m hoping, once the pasta is cooked, I can add it to the chicken in the crock pot just before we take it to church. That way it will all be warm, instead of the pasta getting cold, before we eat.

  5. I would love to make this recipe in the oven, crock pot died awhile back ago, any suggestions on oven temp and time? Thanks

  6. I made this last night and it is very good. I doubled the sauce as others have recommended because I love sauce and gravy lol. I used chicken legs and chicken tenders, it cooked for about five hours on low and it came out perfect, I did add frozen cut broccoli at the fourth hour. It tasted even better the next day.

  7. I made this recently and it’s so easy and sooooo good over spaghetti. I doubled the sauce ingredients.
    Highly recommend!

  8. This is AMAZING!!! For other comments ive seen…..never any fat, and i do the stove top method to make the sauce….just easier if your butter and cram cheese are not at room temp. I have done it whole chicken breast and have shredded to make a spaghetti, I do double the sauce for the spaghetti version ..,…Both ways are AMAZING!! Thank you for this recipe

  9. i made this today, substituting a pound of lump crab meat for the chicken. i ended up adding about 2 cups chicken broth and the sauce was still fairly thick, and i only slow cooked for 2-3 hours. it was delicious.

  10. This has been in my crockpot since 7:30am. I've substituted the Italian for ranch seasoning and doubled the sauce. I put in frozen chicken and it'll be done by 5pm. I'll update with how it tastes but so far it smells good.

  11. I am making this now and it's almost done but I'm noticing that there are little balls of cream cheese in the crockpot. Is that normal?

  12. I love the recipe, but I am concerned about the amount of grease from the chicken mixing with the gravy. Have you may be thought about may be boiling the chicken before putting it in the crock pot?

  13. I did not have any "Cream Of" soup on hand so I made some slight adjustments. It turned out GREAT! I used a whole can of chicken broth, a whole pkg. of cream cheese and a tablespoon of white wine. All the rest of the directions the same. Right before serving, I removed the rather thin sauce, added about a tablespoon of flour and heated slowly in a pan over the stove to gain thickness. Then it was added back to the chicken when served with the pasta. This was a huge hit with my family!

  14. I LOVE this recipe– found it a few years ago in a cookbook I had, and it's one of my go-to recipes now. I hate mushrooms too, so I substituted cream of mushroom soup and it is great. I definitely use the dry white wine instead of chicken broth because i like the flavor blend. and I usually serve it with rice instead of pasta (but that's just a personal preference). glad you liked it 🙂

  15. We enjoyed this for dinner tonight. My husband, who is notoriously anti-"cream-of-xxx", proclaimed this the best "cream-of-xxx" meal I've made. I used white wine, and served it over rice, since we were out of pasta. It was done after about 5-6 hours on low in the slow cooker. Very delicious. Thanks!

    1. My MIL shared this recipe with me many years ago but instead of plain cream cheese she used cream cheese and chives which you can find with the flavored cream cheese in containers in the dairy section. It just kicks the flavor up a notch! The rest of the ingredients are the same.

  16. I've made this a bunch of times and any canned cream of whatever soup works. I have also used the Garlic and Herb dried salad dressing mix instead of the Italian- also good! Once I used a couple of cans of chicken because I wanted it and it was 5pm…Also worked! It's not bad on rice, either.

  17. Love this idea. I bet several of those canned soup flavors would work fine for this. Thanks for the recipe.

  18. I am a fan of mushrooms but don't care for the canned taste that the soup gives them. Mushrooms absorb everything.

This looks and sounds great, I bet using the cream of chicken soup and maybe adding some sauteed fresh mushrooms for the mushrooms lovers would work too!

    1. No mushrooms in this recipe. I used cream of chicken soup. Also used ranch seasoning packet and added frozen mixed veggies to it last 30 min. Excellent dish! So easy and so good!
