How to Make Swiss Chicken

This casserole is super easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. In a large skillet, heat oil until hot. Pan-sear chicken breasts on both sides for 2 minutes. Melt butter in a baking dish and place chicken breasts on top of the butter. Top chicken with slices of swiss cheese. In a bowl, whisk together cream of chicken soup, garlic powder, pepper, and chicken broth. Pour the soup mixture over the chicken. Top the chicken with crushed croutons and bake until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF.

Helpful Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • I use boneless skinless chicken breasts
    • You can use any cut chicken that you enjoy. Boneless chicken thighs and chicken tenders both work fine.
    • Adjust the cooking time to ensure an internal temperature of 165ºF.
  • I use Texas Toast croutons. You can use any flavor that you enjoy.
    • Can substitute a box of stuffing mix for croutons. Do not make the stuffing. Use the dry stuffing mix.

  • You can use any flavor of condensed cream of soup. Cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, or cream of celery soup all work fine.
  • Can Swiss Chicken be made in advance? Yes! Assemble the casserole. Cover and refrigerate the casserole until ready to bake. You may need to add a few minutes to the cooking time if baking the chicken straight from the refrigerator.

  1. This was delicious! I used provolone since we don’t like Swiss and I had to cook mine longer. War Eagle!

  2. Could you use rotisserie chicken? Where do you find the croutons?
    Sounds really good!
    Thanks for the info!

  3. This is a favorite family recipe at our house. Though we moisten our stuffing mix topping with some chicken broth so it isn't so hard.

  4. This is one of my favorite recipies. I haven't tried it with the white wine yet, but I will the next time. I followed the recipe the first time but last night I didnt have the cream of chicken soup so I used cream of mushroom. I think I may have liked it better with that. Thank you for such a yummy recipe!

  5. This sounds yummy. We eat a lot of chicken and am always grateful for more ways to prepare it. I don't have those croutons, but i do have some semi-stale Italian bread I need to use up. Might try this tonight!

  6. This was great!!! I used a combo of sliced and shredded swiss and thought that worked well cause the shredded seemed to blend into the sauce. I also used white wine instead of the chicken broth and you definitely could taste the wine…however we enjoyed. It reminded me slightly of the swiss cheese fondue we make!
