In the South, black eye peas are a must for New Year’s Day. Black-eyed peas are said to bring you good luck and prosperity in the new year. I am not one to tempt fate, so I always eat black eye peas on New Year’s Day. This year I am going to make these Slow Cooker Black Eye Peas and Ham. They are SUPER easy to make and taste great! We serve the peas with some extra ham and homemade cornbread. It doesn’t get much better than this!
How to Make Slow Cooker Black Eye Peas and Ham
These peas couldn’t be any easier to make. Simply dump dried black eye peas, chicken broth, diced ham, water, and cajun seasoning in a crockpot. Cover and cook on LOW until tender.
- You don’t have to soak the peas, just rinse them off and put them in the slow cooker.
- What is Cajun seasoning? It is a mixture of spices used in Cajun/Creole food. It has paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper, oregano, and thyme.
- Here is our recipe for Homemade Cajun/Creole Seasoning: https://www.plainchicken.com/creolecajun-seasoning-secret-recipe/
- If using store-bought Cajun seasoning, look for Tony Chachere’s or Slap Ya Mama. If you are sensitive to salt, make sure to buy a salt-free seasoning.
- For the ham, you can use leftover diced ham, a ham hock, or throw in your ham bone.
- Don’t have ham? Feel free to substitute leftover turkey for the ham. Equally delicious.
- You can add chopped onions, carrots, garlic, bell pepper, or jalapeno to the crockpot for more flavor.
- For a vegetarian dish, use vegetable broth and omit the ham.
What to Serve with Black Eyed Peas
You can serve these peas as a side dish or main dish. If serving as a main dish, I suggest doubling the amount of ham in the recipe. We like to serve the peas with extra ham, cornbread, and extra veggies! Here are a few of our favorite recipes from the blog that go great with these peas:

This is my favorite recipe for black eyed peas! So good! I have not cooked another way since I found this one! I always save my Christmas ham bone for New Years Day. Yum!
I have been interested in adding rotel tomatoes to black eyed peas. I would probably swap that for the broth and eliminate the cajun seasoning.
Do the beans have to soak?
Can you freeze these after they cook?
Absolutely
Happy New Year Stephanie! Thank you for another year of great recipes !!
Your's look better than mine!
Mine are cooking right now, my 8 year old daughter thinks they stink…haha!
Lori – I didn't cook the ham before putting it in the crock-pot.
Stephanie – I used a 6 quart crock-pot.
What size crockpot should be used? I have a 3 qt and a 6 qt.
lori5, I am going to guess and say you could do it either way. I am going to substitute smoked sausage and I will fry mine a bit first just to cook out some of the grease.
yep, black eyed peas and a mess of greens.
We always have the peas, too.
I made your sausage cheese puffs for Christmas morning and they were sooo good. I have them in my post today with a link back to you.
HI, could you tell me if the ham is cooked before you put it in the crockpot?
