Losing It!



I believe that weight is relative. I am not fat, overweight or obese, but I am bigger than I used to be. The last few months have been super crazy, and I lost focus. I let go of my usual workout routine and fell into a slump. I admit it.  I became a slug. I started eating lunch out more, having an extra glass of wine here and there (and everywhere), eating out on Sunday night, sampling foods while I was cooking dinner. You know the drill. I could tell I had put on a few pounds. My clothes weren’t fitting as well as they did before, and I didn’t like the way I looked in pictures.

I think we all have a number that we don’t want to go over. Well, I was at that number. I had to do something.

We recently got back from a long weekend trip, and I decided that I was finally going to re-focus! We were 10 days away from our big Vegas vacation. I wanted to lose a few pounds so I looked good and could indulge in all of the amazing food in Las Vegas!  I committed to exercising daily and watching what I ate. I knew I could commit for 10 days! No Mexican food, no fried food, no sampling while cooking, no wine for 10 days!

I decided to jumpstart the process by replacing some of my meals with Slim-Fast shakes and snacks. I wanted a portion controlled plan. I can’t be trusted to count out exactly what the suggested serving is. I see a broken chip--in my mind that doesn’t count, so I add an extra one. A chip/cookie will be smaller than the rest, so it doesn’t count and I add another one. You know you do it too!

The Slim-Fast products worked great for me. I didn’t have to order anything or make a financial commitment to a weight-loss program. I just went to the store and bought what I wanted, and I was set. I admit that I was worried about just having shakes and snacks all day. Turns out, it was actually pretty easy.

I had a shake for breakfast, a snack between breakfast and lunch, a shake or bar for lunch with a snack pack, a snack mid-afternoon and then I ate dinner. It turned out to be plenty of food for me.

I really, really liked the Peanut Butter Crunch Time snack bars.  They tasted like the little candy bars , but with only 100 calories. I can now indulge my candy bar obsession and not bust out of my pants!  Hallelujah!

The Nacho Cheese snack bites were also really good. They reminded me of Doritos. I can't keep Doritos in the house because I can not resist them! They call to me in the middle of the night. I can't stop eating them until they are gone.  These Nacho Cheese snack bites will help me keep that obsession in check!

The food along with exercise helped me achieve my goal! The plan is for this to be a lifestyle change. I will definitely keep the Slim-Fast program a few days of the week so those Mexican dinners won't be a complete diet buster.

  2. Easy peasy to tell you why. I want to be able to keep up with my kids and watch them grow old before I go. Managing my weight improves my chances and makes me feel better. The exercise and eating healthier also gives me more energy.

  7. I just feel like as I'm getting older my metabolism is changing and the pounds are creeping up - blech. I don't mind getting older but I want to still fit in my clothes and have the same energy level I've always had. Sounds like this plan might be a good jumpstart!

  11. My reason for wanting to lose weight is two fold. Not only do I want to be the healthiest and happiest version of myself possible (moderation is key!) but I'm getting married next April! No time like now to be slim ;)

  14. I have been struggling with my weight since I was in elementary school. I have always been the fat girl. I've tried several diets, on one now, and I can't seem to keep the wait off. I am now married and would love to have children soon. But one thing I want to happen, before we start trying, is to lose weight. Not just to be slim but to be healthy so that I am able to live a full life with my husband and future children.

  22. I recently had my thyroid out the day after my 3 year old had brain surgery. His surgery was not planned. My hubby just had the same brain surgery in May. Needless to say, loosing weight is the last thing on my mind to focus on. We have a family cruise in August and I would love to loose some of this weight. Too bad this thyroid situation is working against me.

  34. Two reasons: (1) I have a special needs son who is going to require a lifetime of care, and I need to be healthier to be around for him as long as possible and (2)We are about to move to a new city and I want to make a better first impression than I currently do!

  38. I read your blog daily to get inspiration on dinner ideas. Have you thought about the ingredients in your food being the reason your weight isn't where you want it to be? A lot of your foods have creams/cheeses/ etc that may be able to be cut to help with your weight loss.

  43. My husband and I have struggled all our lives with our weight. My mom once took the blame for not setting a ether example. We followed her choices; my son follows me and daddy. I'm not dieting; we are changing how we view food and focusing on the good that having lots of fruits and vegetables does for our home. Our son will eat fruits and veggies as if they're going our of style. At 4, he's asking for broccoli with dinner. My job is to model healthy behavior and create a home where we encourage one another. I have to lose weight to be the best mom I can be (because right now I'm sluggish, tired, and upset with myself).

  45. I have exercised 4-5 days a week for the last 18 months and I have gained 9 pounds (What the what???) I discovered yesterday that my husband and I now weigh the same (he's admittedly a very thin man, but he's still 4 inches taller). Plus - I have several pieces in my closet that are 1 size too tight. I've learned that I can't exercise my way out of a bad diet. I need to seriously cut calories. By the end of the summer I want those 9# gone. I started a leaner diet Monday....here's to working for the best!

  64. My father was very, very ill for much of 2012, and it was a very difficult year for me. I became determined to do my best to not put my kids through the same roller-coaster that I had been on for much of the year.

    I haven't been at a healthy weight since before my first pregnancy (and my son is now 9 1/2). My weight has fluctuated over the years, but never getting to where it needed to be. However, since November, I have lost 35 pounds, I'm running 3 times a week on average, I completed my first 10k in March, and attended a boot camp in May. I am hoping to lose several more pounds (9 more pounds and my BMI will be in the "normal" range), but also start focusing on toning and building muscle. Hopefully there's a half-marathon in my future!

    More important that that, though, is the example I'm setting for my kids. They are excited to ask, "How many miles did you run today, Mom?" and my daughter (nearly 7) and I are planning to do a local fun run together.

    If anyone's made it through this super-long comment, just wanted to say I lost the weight using loseit.com and the Lose It! app, and running (albeit slowly, and often in intervals). I don't have a gym membership - I exercise outside year round and love it!

  65. I want to lose weight for my health. I may not look over weight, but after a health check in January I was told I need to lose 22 pounds to be healthy. I've lost 18 so far...those pesky four pounds have been hanging around. I've been working my butt off, but they are super stubborn!!

  73. We were at the beach and I saw all these moms with kids and they were in a two piece. I decided then I could not keep using the kids excuse so we came home and joined the gym. We are now starting our third week and I am much nicer and feel much better since I am spending a little time on me.

  82. The POOL....enough said??? I would like and need to lose about 7-10 lbs to make taking my 2 & 4 yr olds to the pool without feeling depressed every time...it would also be great to fit comfortably into my wardrobe--everything is just a litttttle too tight right now, and I can't just go buy new bigger things as that would be accepting my laziness at not losing the #s! :)
