Spooktacular Halloween Candy Cake – a great way to use up any leftover Halloween candy. Orange and black zebra cake surrounded with black licorice and topped with Reese’s pieces. Use cake mix for a quick and festive Halloween treat!
Cake Decorated with Leftover Halloween Candy
YEARS ago, I made a cake decorated with Kit-Kats. It was so much fun! I decided to put a Halloween twist on that cake and use black Twizzlers and Reese’s Pieces for the decorations. I think it turned out super cute spooky!
How to Make a Zebra Striped Cake
I took this cake one step further and make an orange and black zebra cake. I used a box of white cake mix for the cake, but you can make your own. To make the zebra cake, spoon approximately one tablespoon of one color of batter in the middle of each cake pan. Top the batter with one tablespoon of the alternate color of batter. Repeat this process until all batter is used. Bake according to package directions, cool, and frost.
Since I used a cake mix, I decided to make homemade chocolate buttercream. It was delicious! I tinted the buttercream black for Halloween. It looked creepy, but it tasted great.
- You can skip making the zebra cake if you prefer and just decorate the cake with the candy.
- You can use any candy on top of the cake you prefer.
- Feel free to use a can of store-bought frosting instead of making your own.
- I suggest gel food coloring. You can find it at Hobby Lobby and Michael’s.
- I used orange and black food coloring. Orange and green would be fun too!
- You can make the cake a day or two in advance and refrigerate until serving.

This cake is spookylicious! It is perfect for any upcoming Halloween celebrations! I LOVE the inside of the cake. It is a fun surprise for everyone when you cut into the cake.

Spooktacular Halloween Cake
Ingredients:
- 1 box white cake mix plus ingredients to make cake
- orange food coloring
- black food coloring
- 2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature
- 12 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted and cooled
- 3 Tbsp heavy cream
- 1½ tsp vanilla extract
- 5 cups powdered sugar
- Black Twizzlers
- Reese’s pieces
Instructions:
- To make zebra cake – divide cake batter in half. Tint each half of the batter with the desired color.
- Grease and flour two 8-inch cake pans.
- Using a medium cookie scoop or spoon, drop approximately 1 tablespoon of one color of batter in the middle of each cake pan. Top the batter with 1 tablespoon of the alternate color of batter. Repeat this process until all batter is used. (you do not have to wait for the batter to spread before adding the alternate color)
- Bake cake according to package directions. Cool completely.
- In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter until smooth and creamy, 2 to 3 minutes. With the mixer on low speed, add chocolate until just combined. Add cream, vanilla, and sugar; mix on medium until well combined. Add black food coloring if desired.
- Frost cake with chocolate buttercream. Cut Twizzler’s to size – about 1/2-inch taller than cake. Press Twizzlers on edge of the cake. Top cake with Reese’s pieces.
