Meow Monday – Sherbert

Last Thursday my heart shattered into a million pieces. My sweet Sherbert went to heaven. We found out the week before that she had kidney failure. She was in the hospital and improving, but she couldn’t go on any longer. She was ready to go see Marmalade and her sister, Pumpkin.

We adopted Sherbert and her sister, Pumpkin, in the Fall of 2000. They had been abandoned on the side of the interstate. Someone brought them to the vets office and Chicken Legs insisted we adopt them.

Sherbert had lots of nicknames, as most pets do. Bert, Bertie Bert, Sherbie, Turbo, Turbo Sherbo, Turbie, Bertie B, Sweet B, Sweet Pea, B B, just to name a few.

She loved to sit in my lap. She purred so loud. She was a little purr-colator.

She didn’t like to be held. She turned into the tasmanian devil if you attempted to pick her up.

She was fast as lightning. Hence the nickname, Turbo.

She loved to roll around on the rugs.  She loved burlap – went absolutely crazy rubbing all over it.

She always got in my overnight bag when I was packing.

She would stand up to check things out.

She LOVED to get in drawers.

She could jump from the floor to the top of Chicken Legs’ dresser – about 5 feet.

She loved to sit in boxes.

She spent most of her days during the winter in front of the heater.

Her favorite human food was ham and cheez-its. I left my ham sandwich unattended one day and she stole the ham out of it and ate it! I had to start making a plate of ham for her at lunch.

Sherbert was always special to me. She went through a lot in her short life and was a tough little cookie.
I had almost 14 wonderful years with Sherbert. She was my everything. I loved her more than anything in this world.
It will be strange going into the bedroom and not seeing her sleeping on the bed. I will miss her meowing at me, sleeping by my side and petting her.
She has only been gone a few days, but we all miss her tremendously.
 “We’re the best ones.”

  1. Stephanie, after I posted the question, I had to do a search and find out. I'm so sorry about Sherbert. It's such a hard thing to go through. They are so much a part of our lives. Hugs.

  2. I always look forward to Meow Monday, and I will miss seeing Sherbert–thank you for saving her and giving her a wonderful home!

  3. Meow Monday is one of my favorite days. I've been away from the computer for a few weeks and came right here to catch up. When I only saw Jack and Fluffy, my heart sank. Much love to you, your husband, and the furbabies.

Lisa and the furbabies: Turbo, Avo, and Tikka

  4. Just spent the past while looking for Sherbert – know you are missing her as I was as well. You were a good human and she is lucky to have had you just as you were to have had her. Good memories your way, she was one-of-a-kind and a special on Meow Mondays. We join in your sadness.

  5. I am so sorry to hear about Sherbert. I always look through the pictures on Meow Mondays and smile because they are too cute. At least we all got to meet her.

  6. I am so sorry for your loss of Sweet Sherbert. I lost my cat to kidney failure just a couple years ago. I totally understand how you feel. I loved all your photos & the sweet story about her. They are always in our heart. Blessings you you.

  7. I'm feeling for you! We lost our black and gray tabby, Miss Kitty, last year (age 16) and our precious orange tabby, Stewart, just this past January (age 15). I'm so very, very sorry for your loss. Give Jack and Fluffy extra scritches!

  8. She'll always be with you, always. If Jack and Fluffy seem like they're playing with someone that's not there it's her. Positive vibes coming you and your family's way in hopes that they help your heart heal faster.

  9. So sorry for your loss of sweet Sherbert! My sweet Maggie has been gone for almost two years now and I still miss her every day. Praying for you!

  10. Aw, I was out and am just now reading this. It's Ramona. I changed my google+ I.D.

I'm so sorry. She had a good home and was well loved. She could not have asked for more that that.

  11. I'm so sorry to hear this. We lost a sweet 14 year old kitty a couple of weeks ago. Kidney failure as well. She passed while I was on a business trip, so I never got to say goodbye. 🙁 Our dog has finally stopped searching the house for her. That totally broke my heart.

  13. I am so sorry:( I can tell you guys really loved her, and based on those photos it looks like she had an incredibly happy life with a great family, which is more than any cat can hope for:) rip Sherbert you won't be forgotten

  14. I know this will sound contrite, but I feel your pain. I lost my 19 yr old male tabby, Cookie on July 5, 2013. After all the poor guy went though thoughout his long and wonderful life, bone cancer left me to make the decision I had always dreaded. I hope time and great memories will heal you. I'm still waiting for it to happen for me. RIP Sherbert. Peace.

  15. I'm so sorry about Sherbert! She looks almost exactly like our newest to us cat, Rocky, whom we almost lost as well to kidney failure. He was depressed from the death of his mom (my mil) and stopped eating. It took a lot of loving and cuddles to get him happy and eating again.

  16. Ohhh, sweet Bert. I'm so, so sorry. I know you loved her so very much, and it is so very hard to lose a pet. We've lost two cats, and it's just heartbreaking. I remember writing the blog posts with tears running down my cheeks as I typed them. I pictured you doing the same. Sweet friend, hugs to you and Tadd. Love you both.

  17. I am so sorry about Sherbert! I love seeing her pics. She really had a great personality. I know you are going to miss her like crazy. Hugs!

  18. Rest well, sweet Sherbert! As I had mentioned to you a few weeks ago, she reminds me so much of our Foster, whom we lost 3 weeks ago. They are playing together with all those who have gone before. Sherbert and Foster were very much alike, in their personalities as well as their coloring. We still hear him in our other cats' voices and see him in their actions. You will also find her looking after you when you see and hear Jack and Fluffy. Peace and joyful memories to you and Chicken Legs, as well as the rest of the family. She is always with you in your heart!

  19. I am so sorry! Pets hold such special places in our hearts. Sherbert sounds a lot like our Panther (who doesn't like to be held either). I love Meow Mondays……praying for all who loved her.

  20. Steph, I read the news at work and people asked me what was wrong, because I just started crying. I look forward to reading/seeing the fur faces every Monday. They (and you) make my day! Thank you for sharing your babies with us every Monday. I know the pain you must be feeling. Hugs, purrs & prayers, my friend!

  21. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I lost Molly B, a pure black cat that was so fast, she could catch anything that came into her yard and Mobie, a giant tabby male found abandoned at a gas station, hence the name Mobie. That was 10 years ago with Mobie and 6 years for Molly B. I still miss them and tears come when I think of them. I have adopted several abandoned cats since their passing, but I never forget the ones who came into my life and shared it for a few years. I now have two rescued cats, a big grey male named Dusty and a black Persian named Blackie. I think we have adopted another. We have had a cat hanging around since the neighbors left. We are feeding him/her and we leave our garage door ajar so he has a place to get out of the snow. Once he gets used to us and our two cats, we will have another, . He has no name right now. While we love our current cats, I never forget those who left us. I buried all of them in the back garden next to our greenhouse, with a bush over them and a plaque with their names and how long they shared our life.

  22. I'm soooo sorry for your lost. Hope she will be fine in the cat heaven purring a lot and sleep all day

  23. I am sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is but you gave Sherbert a great life and she enriched yours so hold onto that.

  24. I'm so very sorry for your loss. As so many others have stated, I look forward to your Meow Mondays. 🙂 I had to say goodbye to my 21 year old Cali in October. It's so hard. I'm sorry!

  25. I'm so sorry. Sherbert was quite a beauty, and you will always remember her. We've had an orange boy named Kato for 16 years. He's perfectly goofy, sweet, and full of fun, even in his "advanced" years. He's been FIV positive for many years, but has NEVER been ill. I think orange cats are particularly delightful (my experience). You have given your kitties a wonderful home!!!

  26. Iam crying right now love to see your Monday Meows. My Piccolo looked like Sherbert
    thats been gone 10years.

  27. So sorry – our pets are just an extension of our family- we love them as much! A great tribute to Sherbert.

  28. I am so sorry for your loss. I cried when I read about Sherbie. You loved her and she loved you. You and Chicken Legs gave her a life she would not have experienced if you had walked away from the vets office on that special day. Love and hugs.

  29. I'm soooo sorry for your loss. She was such a beautiful little girl. Meow Mondays just won't be the same.
    (((Hugs)))

  30. Stephanie, I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet Sherbert. Please take comfort in knowing that you and your husband gave her a loving home and made her life so comfortable. I have a cat and have grown accustomed to him being there always. I enjoy your blogs for the recipes but especially seeing your cats every week! Your other 2 cats will definitely be sad too. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss…….(hugs)

  31. I am soooo sorry to hear about your loss. They truly become part of the family and you gave her such an amazing life. My heart goes out to you.

  32. What a happy life you gave her. From being abandoned to being cherished, and then well-grieved. She did well.

  33. I am so sorry to hear this! I don't know you or your cats other than from what you post here, but I am still in tears reading your beautiful tribute to her. I was just chatting with you last week about food and I shared with you the pic of my orange kitties dressed up for Christmas. Pets are our family and it is heartbreaking to lose one of them. Try to remember how wonderful you made her life by adopting her and how much joy she brought to your family also.

  34. I'm so sorry for your loss! Sherbert had an awesome home with you guys — I can tell how much you cared for her. It's so, so hard to lose a pet. They truly are our family. And now I'm crying too…. Hugs.

    1. p.s. I loooooove the photo of her standing upright on her back legs — my sweet Dixie used to do that too! Just like a little mongoose.

  35. What a sweet little girl. I am glad she has friends on the other side waiting for her! I hope you are ok; it makes me very sad to think of losing my own little ones. My deepest sympathies to you and your family.

  36. My heart goes out to you. I have my cat Mooch, who was abandoned also and chose to adopt me – I cannot imagine losing him; it makes me cry to think of it. I'm very sorry for the loss of Sherbert and glad you had 14 wonderful years together. I picture Sherbert romping with joy in heaven with her friends.

  37. I am very sorry for you loss ..She looked like such a comical cat for sure ..I am sure you had many wonderful times with Sherbert. I am sure she is having a great time on the rainbow bridge.

  38. I'm so very sorry about Sherbert. I had grown very attached to seeing her sweet face on Meow Mondays and she will be missed. Sending hugs to you and your family.

  39. well poo. that just stinks. Thinking warm thoughts for you as you are missing your lil orange fur baby.

  40. Oh Steph I am so so sorry for your loss! I have lost 2 cats to kidney failure… it's awful. Big hugs to you and chicken legs, and to Jack and fluffy. Hang in there.

  41. Many, many sympathies to you and chicken legs for your sweet Sherbert. I will miss seeing her on Monday mornings. I just love the picture of your "crazy, standing Sherbert" – I have that pinned from a long time ago and every time I look at it makes me laugh.

  42. I am so very sorry for your loss Steph. I will miss sherbert on Mondays. Please give a scratch to Jack and Fluffy for me. I am sure they will miss their friend also.

  43. i'm a weeping mess right now after reading this post. i'm so sorry for your loss. i lost my big fat fatty (yes that was my cats name) 2 yrs ago this month. i still cry over her so i understand your sorrow. i still expect to see her waddle into the room even today and sometimes it seems like i catch her out of the corner of my eye but she's not really there…only in my heart forever.

  44. Steph, I'm so sorry to hear you've lost your precious Sherbert. We've lost a number of our cats through the years and it never gets any easier. They each have their own special personalities and those that have never had a cat can't even begin to understand how special they are. Hugs to you and your family.

  45. Tears in my eyes. So sorry. I'm still mourning my wiener dog Daisy after 8 years so I know what you're going through.

  46. Im so sorry to read of your sweet Sherbert's transition….. Hugs to you all during this difficult time….
“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard” (by A.A. Milne)

  47. So sorry for your loss. Have 3 myself & am so glad you had so much time with her. Beautiful way to remember her as your pictures seem to've really captured her personality the way you describe it.

  48. I am so very sad to hear about Sherbert!! Animals have such a way of entangling themselves in our hearts. Their love is the purest! Hugs to both of you!

  49. So sorry to hear about Sherbert. It is so difficult to lose our fur babies. My girls and I so look forward to Meow Mondays and seeing your sweet kitties. Thank you for sharing them with us. Many good thoughts and hugs to you.

  50. Oh, cute Sherbert, my heart also broken..But she had a so good life, their life is short anyway, so she had a really good life which many other cats would like to live. You called them Sherbert, it reminds me of serbet (turkish word) which means a very sweet drink and anything which is very sweet. I feel for the others' cats as I feel for mine.

  51. I am so sorry for your loss. We lost our sweet girl a little over a year ago, so I know how difficult it is.

  52. You don't know me, but I've been receiving your Meow Mondays for several months now. I love cats too and have been enjoying all the pics you post each week. I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am to hear about Sherbert passing. It's never ever easy to lose a part of your family. Thank you for sharing her with us.

  53. Oh Steph, I love your meow monday pics of your fur children. I have four kitties and I know the loss of one would be devastating to all. I will say a prayer for you and chicken legs, and your little ones. You have a lot of followers who consider you a friend even though we have never met you. Please know lots of people are sad for you today, and send you love and best wishes.
    Vicki

  54. My heart breaks with you, Steph. I have been a cat lover all of my life and I still mourn the loss of many! The loss makes another hole in your heart and one day you will meet them all on the "rainbow bridge".

  55. I'm so very sorry your sweet one passed. I truly understand. My sweet little man went on in October. Hang in there many hugs to you.

  56. So sorry for your family's loss. We will all miss seeing that precious face on Mondays. Extra scratches to Jack & Fluffy.
