The Kentucky Derby is this weekend. We aren’t horse racing fans, but we always watch the Kentucky Derby. I actually prefer the food over all of it! Mint Juleps, Hot Browns, Derby Pie – I love all of it!

This is a twist on a Kentucky Hot Brown. A traditional Kentucky Hot Brown is roasted turkey, Mornay sauce, bacon, and tomatoes. I swapped out the roasted turkey for a burger and the result was amazing! I served the burgers on a pretzel bun – OMG, delicious! These are kind of messy, but totally worth it!

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • ½ lb sausage
Mornay Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • Pinch of freshly ground pepper
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, to taste
  • ½ cup coarsely grated Gruyère or Swiss

  • 6 slices cooked bacon
  • 6 slices tomato
  • 6 hamburger buns

instructions:

  1. Combine ground beef and sausage. Shape into 6 hamburger patties. Grill to the desired temperature. We cook the burgers for about 3 minutes on each side.
Mornay Sauce

  1. Melt butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in flour, and cook, stirring constantly, about 1 minute. (Do not let the mixture brown.)
  2. Add milk, whisking constantly. Bring to a low boil, and cook, stirring constantly, about 2 minutes more. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Remove from heat, and stir in cheese. Allow to cool slightly.
To Assemble the Burgers

  1. Place burger onto of bun, top with some mornay sauce, a slice of bacon and slice of tomato.

  2. Up until a couple of years ago, I had not heard of "Hot Brown" A friend and I went to Atlanta,Ga and while there she took me to the "Dwarf House Chick-fil-A, and we ordered Hot Browns. Now let me tell you this Chick-fil-a is the original Chick-sil-a! and it is nothing like any of the other Chick-fil-a's, Anyway that was the first time I had had one and it was really good. And of course it was made with chicken. So I am going to try and make one for my hubby.
    thanks for the recipe!

  4. I LOVE Hot Brown Sandwiches so am so excited to see your burgers. Please excuse this seemingly ignorant question but what type of "sausage" are you referring to?–a breakfast type, Italian? Thanks and LOVE all of your recipes!
