The other day I was making cupcakes for a friend’s birthday. I started to make the buttercream and realized that I didn’t have enough powdered sugar. I had already sent Chicken Legs to the store to get some cake mix, so I didn’t want to hear him complain about going back so soon. I decided to whip up my own powdered sugar. I pulled out my Blendtec blender, and, in about 15 seconds, I had powdered sugar!
You only need two ingredients to make homemade powdered sugar – sugar and cornstarch. It helps to have a powerful blender, but any blender or food processor should work. One tip – make sure you wait a minute or two before opening the top on the blender. There is a lot of powdered sugar dust inside the blender. You don’t want that all over your kitchen – trust me! 🙂
Place ingredients in blender. Blend on high speed for 15-30 seconds, until sugar has turned into powder. Wait a minute or two for the dust to settle before opening lid.
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
I use arrowroot powder and tapioca starch as a substitute for cornstarch in all recipes. It is a 1:1 substitute that works perfectly every time. Whole Foods 365 brand of powdered sugar uses tapioca starch in place of cornstarch. So if you're looking for corn-free, that's a brand to buy .
I had no idea you could make powdered sugar (I guess I never really thought there was a powdered sugar plant either, but…!). Thanks so much for this awesome tip!
Wow! This is crazy easy!!! I can't tell you how many times I've run to the store for powdered sugar… when I could have just made it myself??? Get out of here!!! This is fantastic – thank you!
I love seeing DIY recipes like this! Perfect for those times you're half way into a recipe and realize you're out of a key ingredient. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Would arrowroot starch or tapioca starch work in the place of corn starch?

I had no idea….oh my. I guess I never questioned what powdered sugar was before. Thank you so much. I feel much more enlightened now. lol.
This is a great tip!!! I will definitely try this and thank you for the other tip to wait a bit to take the top off the blender. lol Catherine
Genius, just like your homemade brown sugar tip.
Great tip! Now, I'll never run out!
What a handy tip!
