Stop what you are doing and add this French Onion Chicken and Rice Bake to your menu tonight! I am totally obsessed with this casserole! It is super simple to make; especially if you use rotisserie chicken. It took 5 minutes to whip together and it was on the table in about 20 minutes!

As I’ve said before, I love Kraft French Onion dip. Make sure to use your favorite brand of refrigerated French Onion dip in this recipe since that gives the dish a lot of flavors. We absolutely LOVED this casserole. I ate way too much of this! We ate the leftovers for lunch the next day and it was equally delicious.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. Spray a 9×13-inch pan with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil. Add instant rice, cover and turn off heat. Allow to stand for 5 minutes, until all water is absorbed.
  • In a large bowl, combine chicken, chicken soup, French onion dip, cheddar cheese, chicken broth and cooked rice. Spread into prepared pan. Top with French Fried Onions.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes:

  • Can substitute 4 cups of any cooked rice for the minute rice and water.
  • Can make in advance and refrigerate or freeze for later.
  • To bake after freezing, thaw completely and bake as directed above.
  • 5 containers of french onion dipThis recipe uses refrigerated sour cream French onion dip such as Helluva Good Dip, Dean’s Dip, Kraft Dip, or Barber’s Dip. Walmart also sells a Great Value refrigerated French Onion Dip.
  • If you can’t find the dip, substitute sour cream and a tablespoon of onion soup mix.
  • I suggest using Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup in this dish to control the sodium.

  1. I made this last week for the first time and it was so easy and extremely DELICIOUS!! I went heavy on the spices and extra in the French fried onions! We had left overs so I sent it to my sister-in-law’s house so they could all have some, but my nephew took it and ate ALL of it before anyone else could have any!! Then he came over yesterday and begged me to make it for him ASAP!! We all LOVED it!!!! Thank you!!

  2. Yum! and so easy! Creamy, tangy an lots of chicken ( I added more for my husbnd who prefers a good meat ratio in a casserole. Try it; you won’t be disappointed

  3. Super easy and nice flavors. I used onions on top, but may try corn flakes the next time. Also might throw in some kind of veggie. Will make again, for sure!

  4. Great recipe! I needed something quick with everyone running a different direction with school and sports and work…
I didn’t have cheddar so I used Monterey Jack and I used Ritz Crackers on top because I didn’t have the fried onions (will make the original once I have the right ingredients) but even with a couple small changes it was great and everyone loved it! My teens asked for me to put it in their cookbooks (I made 3 ring binders they can go to when they live on their own and can cook for themselves 🙂 ).
Thank you! Looking forward to trying other recipes of yours!

  5. Just made this for dinner. Everyone loved it. The kids asked me to make it again before they were even finished eating. Next time I think I’ll add some peas just to sneak in some veggies but it’s amazing as is.

  6. I made this following the recipe and it was delicious 😋 A huge hit in my house by my family !! I’m making again adding mushrooms and debating on whether to sauté some chopped onions and adding them into the casserole.

Thank you for sharing your recipe 💗

  7. I wasn’t too sure when making this recipe…chip dip baked?!? Let me tell you, this not only was super easy to throw together BUT it was delicious!!! Hubby went back for 2nds & I am looking forward to having leftovers for dinner tonight! P.S. I think it needs way more Fried Onions!

    1. So glad you enjoyed it! It is a favorite at our house too. I also love the fried onions – SO good!

    2. Absolutely LOVED this recipe first time through, although I couldn’t resist adding broccoli florets (you know how much broccoli loves creamy cheese!). Also, added 2x the crispy fried onions and baked for 35 mins, then broiled at 425° for 10 mins. The fried onions actually charred in a way that adds a really flavorful complement to the broccoli!! Ymmv, but really very happy to serve this at my next pot luck 🙂

  8. Easy, delicious recipe!

Here’s a tip for the cooked chicken : put a couple frozen breasts in your crock pot in the morning with about 1/2 cup or more of broth, some seasonings like S/P, garlic and onion powder, and poultry seasoning. On low 9-10 hours or less and it will be the juiciest, tender and easy to shred chicken.

  9. This was so good! I used regular rice. It tasted good while mixing so all it needed was the French fried onions. Next time I will add more cheese and French fried onions. My son suggested adding Buffalo sauce and ranch dressing! Next time! Great recipe
