Sausage & Cheese on Party Rye Bread

I’ve been making these Hanky Panky Appetizers for years. Someone brought these to a tailgate and they disappeared in no time! I got the recipe and I’ve been making them ever since. They are easy to make and go over well at a party. They are equally delicious for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I like to eat them for dinner with a baked potato or bowl of chili. Add this recipe to your menu. It is sure to become a favorite!

How to Make Hanky Panky Appetizers

These individual appetizers are SUPER easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. In a large skillet, cook pork sausage over medium-high heat until crumbled and no longer pink. Drain excess fat. Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and Velveeta cheese. Stir just until combined. Spread the meat mixture onto cocktail rye bread slices. Place the bread on a baking sheet and place under the oven broiler until golden brown. Garnish with parsley, if desired.

Helpful Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • I use Jimmy Dean sausage. You can use any brand or flavor of sausage that you enjoy. Italian sausage is super delicious.
    • Can substitute turkey sausage.
    • If you don’t like sausage? Feel free to substitute ground beef.
  • I like to chop the cooked sausage in the food processor to get it finely chopped.
  • Do not overheat the Velveeta. You just want it warm enough to stir into the sausage. Overheating the Velvetta will make queso dip!
  • Feel free to add your favorite spices to the cheese mixture: oregano, garlic salt, or red pepper flakes are all great additions.
  • find the cocktail bread loaves in the deli/bakery section at the grocery store.
    • If you don’t like rye bread, you can substitute party pumpernickel bread, English muffins, or slider buns.
    • Serve the meat mixture on hamburger buns for sandwiches at lunch or dinner.
  • I find the party rye bread loaves in the deli/bakery section at the grocery store.
  • You can assemble the toasts and freeze them for a quick treat later. To bake after freezing, allow to thaw and broil.

  1. I have not eaten such cheese and sausage breads for ages, but remember my how my mother did them. Very tasty, though surely also depending on the sausage quality 😉
    Cheers, from cheese country Switzerland

  2. We call these Hankie Pankies here in my neck of the woods. They're delicious. But I'm going to have to say "GO BUCKS" to make this comment complete.

  3. Oh yeah, I had forgotten all about these little goodies! They are a great snack for football for sure.

  4. It sounds good with the exception of the Rye. Can't get use to the taste. And really now that I'm old, don't want to.

Too much good food in the world, will just eat what I like.

Would luv to make them but sub in the little wheat bread instead.

  5. We do snacks and appetizers for Christmas Eve in my family – if our variation of these isn't there it's not Christmas. Our variation is that we double the recipe and use a 2-lb block of velveeta and then in addition to the sausage we add a pound of ground beef. Now I'm totally craving these!!
