Gooey Butter Cookies with Almond Extract

It’s December, and I have Christmas cookies on my mind. This might be my new favorite cookie. These are so simple, but so delicious. I have to warn you, these cookies are not low-cal. They have a block of cream cheese and a stick of butter in them. That being said, the cookies are delicious and very addictive. Chicken Legs recommends waiting to eat the cookies until they are completely cool (he did an unscientific test – for the blog). These cookies are a new holiday tradition at our house!

How to Make Almond Cream Cheese Crinkles

These cookies are super easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. In a large bowl, mix together yellow cake mix, egg, almond extract, cream cheese, and butter with an electric mixer. Cover dough and chill overnight. When ready to bake, scoop the cookie dough and roll the balls in powdered sugar. Place cookie dough on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Cool cookies on a wire rack.

Helpful Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • The dough needs to refrigerate overnight or at least several hours. It will be too sticky if you don’t refrigerate it.
  • You can use any flavor of cake mix that you enjoy. Chocolate cake mix or white cake mix are both delicious.
  • Can substitute vanilla extract if you don’t like almond flavor.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container. They will keep up to 3 days at room temperature.
  • Can Almond Cream Cheese Crinkles be frozen? Yes! Once the cookies are completely cool, place them in a freezer bag and freeze. They will keep 3 to 4 months. When ready to eat let the cookies thaw for 30 minutes to an hour on the counter.

Comments

  1. I colored my dough green and added red sprinkle sugar to my powdered sugar.

The recipe yields 3 dozen cookies when using a cookie scoop to form the cookies.

  2. Thank you so much for this recipe.I increased the almond extract to 1 TBS for my taste preference .This is my most requested cookie to make. Everyone loves them. I suggest using the Duncan Hines if you can find it. The Pillsbury Golden Butter works but it much more yellow in color like a yellow cake mix than the ones shown

  3. Hi, found your recipe from Pinterest. I also would like to know how many cookies can I make with this recipe. Thank you!

  4. I just mixed up a double batch of this cookie batter and I am going to be baking cookies for days! I'm using the small Pampered Chef cookie scoop, and I would say the cookies are "two-bite" size. I also had to bake them a few minutes longer than the recipe calls, but that could be my oven.

I used Duncan Hines Golden Butter cake mix – found it at Kroger. Gooey butter cake is the name of another yummy recipe that uses cake mix and cream cheese.

  5. I haven't ever made any of the "Gooey Butter" cake or cookie recipes but this one looks really good and super easy. I think the combination of almond extract & cream cheese will make it decadent and perfect with a cup of tea. I think I might try adding some slivered almonds as well just to give it a little crunch.

  6. But what does Steph say about the almond????? Did you add Almond extract???? If not why is it called Almond cookies???

  7. This is a gooey butter cookie and the regular recipe calls for 1\4 tsp. Vanilla extract. So maybe add 1/4 tsp. Almond extract instead
