Black-Eyed Pea Soup for New Year’s Day

It is a Southern tradition to eat black eyed peas on New Years’Day. Eating black eyed peas is said to bring you good luck and prosperity in the new year. I need all the luck I can get, so I always eat black eyed peas.

This year we are making a batch of Black Eyed Pea and Smoked Sausage Soup. Black eyed peas, smoked sausage, cajun seasoning, and Rotel tomatoes. Not only is this soup easy to make, but it also tastes super delicious! We served this soup over some rice, and it was delicious and filling.

How to Make Black Eyed Pea & Smoked Sausage Soup

This soup is super easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. To make the soup, cook sausage slices in a Dutch oven. Add black-eyed peas, onion, garlic powder, Rotel diced tomatoes and green chiles, cajun seasoning, chicken broth, and stir. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes. Garnish the soup with some fresh parsley or herbs of your choice.

  • I like to use Conecuh Smoked Sausage or andouille sausage. You can use any brand that you prefer.
  • To reduce the calories, use Smoked Turkey Sausage.
  • Is Black Eyed Pea & Smoked Sausage Soup spicy? There is a small kick to the soup from the Rotel tomatoes. If you are worried about the heat, use a can of MILD Rotel tomatoes.
  • What is Cajun seasoning? It is a mixture of spices used in Cajun/Creole food. It has paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper, oregano, and thyme.
  • For store-bought Cajun seasoning, I like Tony Chachere’s or Slap Ya Mama. Look for salt-free seasoning if you are sensitive to salt.
  • Adjust the seasoning up or down to your desired heat level.
  • If using store-bought Cajun seasoning, I highly recommend using low-sodium chicken broth or chicken stock.
  • We serve the soup over rice. You can use any cooked rice that you enjoy – white, brown, jasmine. You can omit the rice if you prefer.
  • Can I make this soup in the slow cooker? Yes! Brown the sausage and dump the remaining ingredients into the crockpot and cook until warm.

  1. I’m so excited to find this recipe. I’m hoping it’s what I’ve tried at a restaurant we ate at. Do you only use the chicken broth? Have you ever tried it with the beef broth? I will definitely let you know how it turns out! Thanks for sharing your recipe.

  2. Made this for New Year’s Day. It was awesome! We do like spicy but I only used one tablespoon of Tony’s. I did add some collard greens and served it over rice. Thanks!

  3. Made this soup for our dinner tonight. It’s delicious. Got high praise from everyone. I didn’t have Rotel on hand so I used a can of green chilies & a can of petite diced tomatoes. Thank you for this recipe. One question, I couldn’t find the nutrition information for this recipe, Do you have it?

  4. Made this and it is so good! I added a little spinach since I’ve always heard the black eyed peas are for luck and greens are for wealth 🙂

  5. This was excellent. It was perfect for a snowy New Year’s Day. I used 3 cups of chicken broth and cut the Cajun seasoning down to 1 heaping teaspoon of Cajun seasoning since we don’t like things real spicy. I didn’t add rice. It was perfect! Will definitely make more often.

  6. Thanks for the inspiration, Stephanie! Made this for New Years Day yesterday. Unfortunately it also meant discovering that we don't like "Cajun style" seasoning. Oops!

Takeaway: Make a small batch if you aren't sure your family enjoys hot & spicy Cajun flavors.

    1. I always like to cook the sausage so it gets a little color on it, but you could just drop it in the slow cooker and it will be fine.

  7. Made this yesterday for New Year's dinner & it was fantastic! Our grocery store didn't have the Cajun broth, so I just used beef broth. This recipe is a keeper! Thanks, Stephanie! 🙂

    1. I made some ribs last night and thought about adding some left over rib meat to this recipe. Have you ever added any extra protein like chicken or pork to this?

  8. Fantastic! I used what I had- free-range organic chicken broth, mild RoTel, and Aidell's chicken and apple sausage. It was delicious, and it was a huge hit with my family and guests today for New Year's. We will definitely make this again. Thanks so much for sharing!

  9. This recipes looks delicious and easy. I live in south Louisiana and buy Swanson's broth, but I've never heard seen or heard of their Louisiana Cajun version. I wonder if I could just add some Tony Chachere's seasoning to make it Cajun.
