This Nine-Day Coleslaw recipe is an oldie, but a goodie! I got this recipe from my Mom; She got the recipe from our neighbor in Nashville. It is a great make-ahead side dish for any upcoming Summer cookouts. This is called Nine-Day Slaw because it keeps for up to  9 days. WOW! It can keep that long because there isn’t any mayonnaise in the coleslaw dressing.

How to Make Coleslaw without Mayonnaise

This slaw is very easy to make. Start with a bag of coleslaw mix from the produce section. Coleslaw mix usually contains a combination of green cabbage, red cabbage, and carrots. Place the coleslaw in a large bowl and some chopped bell pepper. Next, make the dressing. In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, combine sugar, vinegar, oil, salt, and mustard seeds. Heat the dressing just until the sugar has dissolved. Pour the dressing over the coleslaw mix and refrigerate up to 9 days.

Feel free to add some fresh thinly sliced onions to the coleslaw. I like sweet onions. Look for Vidalia onions – they are the best!

Can Coleslaw be Frozen?

Since this coleslaw doesn’t have mayonnaise in the dressing, you can freeze it. Place the slaw in a freezer bag and press out any excess air. Creamy coleslaws with mayonnaise, like KFC Coleslaw, will separate in the freezer.

  1. I was hoping you'd receive an answer. I wanted to make this for the 4th, but I don't want to ruin it if the dressing should be cooled first.

    1. I poured the dressing over the slaw mix hot. I didn't let the dressing come to a roaring boil. I just heated it until all the sugar melted. You can certainly let the dressing sit for a minute or two before pouring over the slaw mix.
