Old Fashioned Oatmeal Pie

Oatmeal Pie is a vintage pie that originated in the civil war era when pecans were in short supply. I found this recipe in an old cookbook. It was described as a poor man’s pecan pie. We love pecan pie, but it really can be expensive with all the pecans. I decided to put the recipe description to the test! Well, it was spot on. This pie does taste a lot like pecan pie! I might even prefer it to pecan pie. We serve this with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. YUM!

How to Make Homemade Oatmeal Pie

This pie is easy to make with only a few basic ingredients. In a large bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, corn syrup, butter, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract. Add oatmeal and give the filling a good stir. Pour the oatmeal mixture into an unbaked pie crust. Place the pie on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until set. Remove the pie from the oven and cool it on a wire rack before cutting it into slices with a sharp knife.

  1. I have made this pie many times. It is a favorite. I made it for the Thanksgiving pot luck at my retirement community and had many compliments. I have even had people ask me to make one for them. It's so easy and is perfect for someone who might have trouble baking. Thank you. Oh, and let me add, today is the Christmas pot luck…guess what I am taking…lol

  2. Very tasty! I added some oatmeal cookie spices too (1 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp each cloves, ginger and nutmeg). Mine took a little more than an hour to bake and seem set up enough to take out of the oven.

  3. I can't wait to try this! My little one loves oatmeal and pie! What a perfect treat 🙂

  4. I've made this pie for a long time, and I agree, it is better than pecan pie. You might also try ritz cracker pie – it tastes a lot like apple pie.

    1. Don't cook the oatmeal first – add to pie uncooked. You can use regular or quick cook oats.

Have no idea how to adapt this for steel cut oats – I don't cook with them.
