How to Make 3 Bean Salad

I used a mixture of canned green beans, yellow wax beans and light red kidney beans in this Three Bean Salad. If you don’t like one of those beans, feel free to swap it out with your favorite canned bean. I sometimes use garbanzo beans in this salad. For the onion in this recipe, I used a sweet Vidalia onion. It goes perfectly in this salad!! Sweet & tangy in every bite.

Is Three Bean Salad Served Hot or Cold?

This side dish needs to be made at least a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator until ready to serve. I serve this straight from the refrigerator. It is also good at room temperature. I made a batch last weekend, and we ate it with lunch during the week. We loved it! It is really yummy. This is definitely going on the menu for our 4th of July cookout.

  1. I love this recipe and have been using it for a while! I put the dressing ingredients in a Pyrex measuring cup and microwave to warm. Stir, warm again, stir until sugar dissolves. My stove was not working and I needed for a picnic!!

  3. STEPH,
I just love your 3 bean salad & in 62 yrs I have tasted many variations, but yours is by far the best there is, @ least in my house. The greatest thing is, it lasts quite awhile, in the refrigerator, due to the vinegar, which makes it perfect for me. I even mix it with a regular green salad & don't need extra salad dressing. Thank for sharing. Lise

  4. Hi Steph,

I think we've been missing the boat because I've never seen three bean salad with chopped onions and green peppers — and I think that's super needed for the flavor! Love a quick potluck side dish!
