These Cake Mix Toffee Bars are great for any last-minute holiday parties, potlucks or homemade gifts. These bars are pretty rich, so I cut them into at least 24 squares. You can make them bigger or smaller according to your personal preference. Chicken Legs prefers about 8 bars for the pan – LOL! I am whipping up another batch this week! SO good!

  1. I’m sorry I’m a beginner at baking when you say make a day ahead and let it sit over night do you
mean bake it the next day

    1. Hi Dawn,
What she’s saying is that you’ll want to bake the bars the day before & let them set overnight. Some recipes are best when done this way b’cause it gives all the ingredients a chance to “marry” & enhances the flavor of that particular recipe. I hope this helps❣️

  2. 10 stars! Delicious and in the oven in about 5 minutes! I used a bag of Heath Bits and a bag of Butterfinger Bis because that’s what I had on hand.

  3. I only had chocolate cake mix and one bag of toffee bits, so I added some white chocolate chips, chopped pecans and coconut. Best bars ever!!

    1. What a great idea! But unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.

  4. I tried with spice cake .. that’s all I had at the time. Only had one 8oz bag of Heath bits partially eaten. So I did have some chocolate and vanilla bits. Lol They turned out yummy. Froze them . Take them out when I want something sweet. They thaw quickly. I have even zapped them to help along. Maybe 10-15 sec. They were still fine. But tomorrow I have all the right ingredients. Can’t wait to make with the yellow cake mix. These are so yummy!!

  5. I’ve been making these every Christmas to add to my Christmas cookies. They are always a big hit! So easy & so yummy!! 😋 Thank you!

  6. Came across this today, tried the recipe tonight. Excellent! I used white cake, skor chipits, salted caramel and a few sprinkles of chocolate chipits. Yummy! Glad you posted and glad I found it.

  7. These are so easy and very yummy! I started making them 3 years ago and they are always a hit. Love easy recipes like this!

  8. What ounce size cake mix does this call for? If this is and older recipe -just new to me – the cake mix size used to be larger. I think it was like 18 oz, now they like many other things have shrunk down -to like 15 or so oz. I will have to use a homemade copycat due to allergies and would like for it to turn out right.

  9. I’ve made these twice using only one bag of Heath bits each time. Although there is nothing better than toffee, 2 bags just seems like too much to me. They are a favorite as is.

  10. Do you recommend refrigerating this beyond letting it set up over night? Like if its already been refrigerated over night, to cool and set up, should I leave them in there continuously or are they okay on the counter after that?

    Thank you!

    1. I have only made this recipe in a 9×13-inch pan, so I can’t say how they would turn out in a half sheet pan.

      1. Last Xmas I made a double batch in a half sheet pan w a sprayed foil lift to hold in the milk. It worked. Only some spots I had to peel a bit of foil caramelized are the bottom. Made it easy to cut into tiny 2 inch bite size squares for a lot of people. Great recipe!

    2. I make it dairy free.
Duncan Hines cake mix, coconut condensed milk. Dairy free chocolate chips and white dairy free chips. Turns out yummy!

  11. Made these tonight with a small twist, I used butterfingers instead. Woah! Still delicious! Thanks for sharing, Plain Chicken! 🙂

  12. Meant to add….my store didn't have the chocolate toffee bits so I added mini chocolate chips with the plain toffee ones! Turned out great! Doing it again this time!!

    1. Wish I had thought of this as the chocolate toffee bits were so hard to find where I live and were quite costly and I had to make two pans. So much easier to find mini chocolate chips and they are frequently on sale in which to stock up. Your substitution obviously didn’t sacrifice flavor. Thanks for the tip!

  13. Just wanted to let you know Stephanie, I made these for an office party several months ago and my boss just asked me to make them for our party next week! That's quite an endorsement.

  14. These are delicious and couldn't be easier to make. Just a note that the Heath brand chocolate-covered toffee bits now seem to only come in 8 oz. bags instead of 10 oz. bags. However, I've found that the two 8 oz. bags still provide plenty of flavor and cover the 9×13 pan with no problem. Just my observation after making these multiple times – bakers adding these ingredients to their grocery lists don't really need to worry about trying to find 10 ounce bags or buying a third bag and using half to have a full 20 ounces.

  15. Hi! I’m wondering if the egg is in addition to the 3 eggs/oil/water that the boxed cake mix calls for? Am I doing the boxed cake mix first, and THEN adding in the egg and butter? Thanks!

  16. Hi! I haven't tried this version of these bars but make something similar and they are so yummy! My recipe doesn't use an egg, and I use the plain toffee bits without the chocolate. I've always wondered how the chocolate covered ones would work. Can't wait to try them. And I have frozen them and they taste just fine once thawed.

    1. I made these for a church event and they were a hit! I had plain toffee bits on hand so I just added mini chocolate chips. I cut them into bite size pieces because they were so rich but everyone grabbed a couple. I will definitely be keeping the ingredients on hand. So easy and yummy!

    1. I haven't tried freezing them, so I am not sure how they would taste after thawing. That being said, I don't see why you couldn't freeze them.

  17. I was looking for something new to bring to my work Christmas party and this recipe showed up in my email. I can't wait to make it, it looks so good!!!
