This past November I took a girls trip to Greece!!! It was SO much fun!! I took a tour with AHI Travel. It was the Athens & Poros Tour. We went to Athens, Poros, Nafplio, Hydra Island, Epidaurus, and Mycenae. Today I am sharing about our time in Athens. We only had about one full day in Athens. I was really worried that it would be enough time to see everything, but it turned out to be plenty of time.

The main attraction in Athens is the Acropolis. It was incredible! I grew up going to the rep lica of the Parthenon in Nashville. It was great to finally see the real thing in person. It is beautiful. My biggest tip is to make sure to go EARLY! It gets crazy crowded! We got there early and walked right in. When we were leaving, there was a huge line.

We stayed in a great hotel. Really nice and very American. It was near the parliament building, so we would walk to see the changing of the guards. It was also really close to a great entertainment district with tons of great food choices.

Keep reading for a virtual tour of our time in Athens.

The Acropolis

At the entrance of the Acropolis, you walk past the remains of the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus.

It is a major theatre in Athens and considered to be the world's first theatre.
The theatre could hold up to 17,000 people.

We continued our climb to the top stopping to look at the Propylaea - it is the gateway to the Acropolis.

We caught a glimse of The Temple of Athena Nike.
It was built in 420 BC.

The Erechtheion on the north side of the Acropolis.
It was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon.

This is the famous Porch of the Maidens.
It has six draped female figures as supporting columns. The porch was built to conceal the giant 15-ft beam needed to support the southwest corner. These are not the original columns. The originals are in the Acropolis Museum.

My reason for coming to Athens - The Parthenon!
We got there as the sun was rising in the horizon.
They are restoring this side of the temple.

The Parthenon was dedicated to the goddess Athena.

Construction began in 447 BC and was completed in 438 BC.

The view of the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus from the top of the Acropolis.

Here are the original statues from the Porch of the Maidens.
The Acropolis Museum has 5 of the 6 statues.
The 6th statue is in the British Museum in London.

On our last night in Greece, we took some nighttime photos of the Acropolis.
We took a cab to Dionysos Zonar's. It is a fancy restaurant with great views of the Acropolis.
They have a nice outdoor area with lots of places to snap a photo.
I didn't have a tripod, so I did my best!

I think this one of the Parthenon turned out great!

Where We Ate in Athens, Greece

We only had time for dinner on our first night in Greece.
We walked around the entertainment district near the hotel and found this CUTE place!
Tazza All-Day Bistro & Wine Bar

The weather was nice, so we snagged a seat outside.

We started with some Prosecco.

We tried a couple of appetizers.
Ntakos (rusk) cheese cake with feta cheese cream and tomato marmalade

Mozzarella brushetta with basil pesto, chopped tomato, olive oil and oregano

“Makarounes” traditional pasta from Naxos, with cherry tomatoes, chicken fillet, fresh spinach and light rosé sauce

Pasta salad, with penne tricolore, cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, arugula and walnuts

All of the food was good and very reasonably priced.
I will say that I enjoyed the fun laid-back atmosphere the best!

Tabepna Vizantino - Athens, Greece
We stopped at this cute place for lunch after our tour of the Acropolis.

Feta Salad at Tabepna Vizantino - Athens, Greece
We started with a tomato & feta salad.

Mousakka at Tabepna Vizantino - Athens, Greece
For our entree, we had Mousakka with potatoes.
It was good. I have to say that I am not a big fan of all the cinnamon in the dishes in Greece.

Tabepna Vizantino

This was my favorite place I ate in all of Greece!

We started with some taziki.

An order of fries for the table.

Baked feta!! I ate more feta on this trip than I have my entire life.

This pita bread was served with the baked feta. SO good!!!

Chicken souvlaki

This pork was incredible!!! SO tender and juicy. Packed full of amazing flavor!

Meatballs

And my FAVORITE thing in Greece - Chicken Gyro.
I ate this in 2 seconds flat. SO good! I almost got a second one to go.

Neoklassiko

After eating all those yummy gyros and meatballs, we went on the hunt for dessert.

We stumbled upon these fun Crazy Milkshakes!!

Milk & Cookies

Where We Stayed in Athens, Greece

We stayed at NJV Athens Plaza.

The room was very spacious.

The bathroom was great.

Very American in the set up.

NJV Athens Plaza is next to Constitution Square.
You can walk to the Parliment building and watch the changing of the guards.
You can also walk down Ermou Street and do lots of shopping!!

I highly recommend NJV Athens Plaza.
Great location and fantastic rooms.
One of the nicestest hotels I've stayed in Europe.
