Last week I shared all about my trip to Athens, Greece. Today I am sharing about my time in Poros. I spent 5 nights in Poros, Greece. Poros is a TINY beach town, but it was a great home base for exploring the island.
The hotel was stayed in was right on the beach. We had AMAZING sunrises and sunsets every day. I don’t think there is a better view on the island. It was also super close to the main area of town. It was a 4 cab ride or a 20-minute walk. The staff was incredibly nice. The rooms were beachy. You will see what I mean in the photos below.
Poros was beautiful and is definitely worth a visit if you are island hopping in Greece. I would suggest going in the summer so you can take advantage of the beaches!
It is a great beach town with lots of fun places to eat on the water.

We had to take a ferry over to the island.
Our bus drove on the boat and drove off when we got to the island.

We arrived to Poros in the late afternoon.

We had to wait for the ferry, so we got some beautiful views of the sunset.
I love this picture with the boats and the sky.

You could stay in the bus or sit outside on the ferry ride over to Poros.
I opted to sit outside on the quick boat ride over to the island.

We spent one full day in Poros exploring the island.
We took a private water taxi from the hotel over to the main street.

We spent a little time in the Archaeological Museum of Poros.
It houses the remains from the sanctuary of Poseidon.
It also has a great view of the water from the top floor.

We took a quick walking tour through the streets with our group, and then we had free time to explore on our own.

Stairs to Clock Tower in Poros Greece
As I mentioned, the Clock Tower is the main landmark in Poros.
You can walk up these stairs to the Clock Tower.
It was a very easy climb with places to stop and rest along the way.

The Clock Tower was built in 1927.
You can’t go inside the tower.

BUT you can see incredible views of the water and island from top of the hill.

What We Ate in Poros

Lunch at Taverna Rota in Poros Greece
We had a group lunch at Taverna Rota. We were served family style.
We had a sampling of Greek favorites – fish, eggplant, grape leaves, salad, a hummus style dish.
We did shots of Ouzo. Opa!

Patisserie Glykisma in Poros Greece
After lunch we stopped in for dessert at this bakery.

We got an assortment of treats. The baklava was the best I’ve ever eaten!
All homemade and delicious!
All of this was 6€

Porto Cafe in Poros Greece
We spent almost every night here at Porto Cafe.
It is a wine bar with some simple appetizers. Nothing fancy.
We sat outside and had some adult beverages.
We could drink all night for about 20€
LOVED how cheap the wine was in Poros!
It was my favorite place in Poros.

Porto Cafe is right on the water – where the water taxis drop off and pick up.

Dinner at Caravella Tavern in Poros Greece
There are several places to eat on the main street in Poros. We ate at three different places. They were all very similar. My favorite place was Caravella Tavern. We had some great food and it was a lively crowd the night we went. A TON of Russian sailors were in town. They were very entertaining.
We sampled a variety of things from the menu – baked feta, chicken souvlaki, pork in cream sauce, and fried sardines! I saved the leftover sardines for the cats at the hotel. The owner came out to talk to us. He had spent time in the US and was excited to talk to us. He even brought us a free dessert! Really fun place on the water!

Dinner at The Odyssey in Poros Greece
The higlight of the trip to Poros was dinner at The Odyssey.
The Odyssey is a hotel/restaurant/cooking school/wedding venue in Poros.
It is beautiful!
The owner, Katerina Sakelliou, made our group the most incredible meal. It was a special treat.
Everything we ate was homemade and made from local ingredients from Poros and Galatas.
We had homemade tzatziki, hummus, homemade bread, feta salad, fish.
Katerina was nice enough to make me some chicken since I don’t eat fish.
Katerina made sure everyone enjoyed their meal. We couldn’t have asked for a better host!
It was a wonderful experience. The best dining experience I had in Greece.
I would love to come back to Poros and stay at The Odyssey and take one of Katerina’s cooking classes. I did manage to get her Tzatziki recipe. I’ll be posting it on the blog soon!
It is worth coming to Poros just to check out The Odyssey!

Where We Stayed in Poros

New Ageli Resort and Hotel Poros Greece
We stayed at the New Ageli Resort and Hotel.
It is right next to the beach.

Now, our room was not the most luxurious place I’ve stayed.
It was definitely a beach hotel.

A big change from the fancy place we stayed in Athens!

The bathroom was my least favorite thing about the room.
That shower was rough! I got really intimate with that shower curtain everyday. LOL!
There wasn’t any room to maneuver, and that handheld shower head was the pits.
I had the power too high and sprayed the entire bathroom the first day. OOPS!

No frills, just a very basic room.
The owners said they were redoing the showers in the off season.
I hope so!!!

  1. I've enjoyed reading your blog on Athens and now Poros. You mention "your group". Did you go with a tour agency or did you do your own planning/scheduling itinerary?

  2. I'm so jealous; I still want to go back to Greece. We stayed in Glyfada just south of Athens.I think there is something special about the light there that makes all the colors more stunning. And, of course, the food is wonderful.
