Cats of Greece – cats are commonplace in Greece. They are well taken care of by the community and very friendly. You can even pet them if you wish! Here are some of the cats we found in Poros, Epidavros, Náfplio, and Hydra.
I had always heard there were lots of cats roaming around in Greece. I found this to be true on my recent trip. I didn’t see a lot of cats in the city of Athens, but I saw tons of cats on the islands. Hydra had the most. They even had cute cat signs up around the city.
Most of the cats in Greece are very friendly despite being feral. The community takes care of the cats. They feed them and work on getting them spayed and neutered. I noticed lots of cats with clipped ears – the universal sign they have been fixed.
You can pet the cats in Greece. I just made sure to Purell my hands afterward! The cats are very common in outdoor dining areas. They are very hopeful you will give them some food! I did every single time. I am a sucker for a sweet kitty Cat!!
Keep reading to see some of my favorite pictures of the cats we saw in Greece. The people in my tour group thought I was crazy. One guy even told me so! (Really nice guy! LOL!) I didn’t care. I love cats and am excited to share them with you today!
These sweet cats were at our first lunch in Poros.
They were SO sweet and went from table to table hoping for some scraps.
They weren’t a nuisance. They just sat and looked at you hoping for food.
This orange beauty was up on the hill with the clock tower.

There were lots of beautiful cats near the water in Poros.
We saw them every night when we were relaxing at the wine bar.
Notice his clipped ear – this means this cat has been spayed or neutered.
This little guy was begging for some of our fried sardines at dinner.
Of course, I gave him some!
We drove past this man feeding a colony of cats in Poros.
Here are some of the resident hotel cats. They look like a cool gang!
They were very vocal about wanting some of our breakfast every morning.
The black cat just pulled up a chair and ate with us! LOL!
Cats in Epidavros Greece
We stopped in Epidarvros to see the ancient theater.
The theater was built in between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC. It could hold around 13,000 or 14,000 people. It is considered to be the most perfect ancient Greek theatre with regard to acoustics and aesthetics.
There were SO many cats on the property.
We turned on the water for this guy.
Found an orange cat!!
This little guy hopped in the chair at our table. He was hoping for food, but we didn’t have any.
There were TONS of kittens.
Cats in Náfplio Greece
After visiting the ancient theater of Epidarvros, we stopped in Náfplio.

My husband and I were planning a trip to Corfu, but, when I heard about all the stray cats, I was very upset. Being animal lovers and cat parents, it’s hard to see. Your post does make me feel better. It seems as though they are taken care of. Are there stray dogs as well?

Glad someone else wandered thru Greece making cat pics. Athens was like hunting Easter Eggs. The cats are there, but discretely hidden. I loved finding them and taking the picture. The taverna kitties were discouraged from jumping on the chairs and eating at the table but were allowed to beg– and the kittens were sooo cute.

There are lots of stray dogs in Greece too, but not as many as cats.
