Prevent the Summer Cookout Burn

Now, I know what some of you are thinking - "These BBQ Pepper Jelly Chicken Drumsticks look delicious, but I can't eat it because I'll get heartburn." I can totally relate! I've had run-ins with BAD heartburn, and it is the worst! It can totally ruin the day. Fortunately, I have a solution! The new Well at Walgreens Omeprazole Orally Disintegrating Tablets treat the same heartburn symptoms as Prilosec OTC ®, but since it’s a store brand, it’s more affordable!

I LOVE that these tablets just disintegrate in your mouth. Game changer! I hate swallowing pills, so Omeprazole ODT is perfect for me! It dissolves quickly on your tongue to provide heartburn relief for up to 24 hours. It has a nice strawberry flavor too.

If you’re suffering heartburn two or more days a week, I’d suggest looking into adding Omeprazole ODT to your routine. It’s a 14-day regimen, taking one dose every 24 hours, that can provide long-lasting relief. You should not take this medication for more than 14 days or more often than every four months unless directed by your doctor. Omeprazole ODT is not intended for immediate relief and may take 1-4 days to feel the full effect. You should not dissolve Omeprazole ODT in liquid or chew the tablets; just place on your tongue and allow to dissolve in your mouth.

How to Make BBQ Pepper Jelly Chicken Drumsticks

These BBQ Pepper Jelly Chicken Drumsticks are super simple to make. The drumsticks are marinated in a combination of Italian dressing and Worcestershire sauce overnight. I put the drumsticks and marinade in a plastic storage bag and let it hang out in the refrigerator until we were ready to grill the chicken. We finished off the cooked drumsticks with a combination of pepper jelly and BBQ sauce. I just whisked the pepper jelly and BBQ sauce together and brushed that mixture over the chicken during the last 5 to 10 minutes of cooking. Serve any leftover sauce with the cooked chicken. I like to dunk my drumsticks in the extra sauce. YUM!

I used a garlic pepper jelly that I found at a local store. Any type of pepper jelly will work fine. My grocery store carries several types of pepper jelly. Save the leftover pepper jelly to serve over a block of cream cheese as an appetizer at your cookout. Double duty!

How To Grill Chicken Drumsticks

We cooked these BBQ Pepper Jelly Chicken Drumsticks on a charcoal grill. It took about 30 to 40 minutes. My number one tip when using a charcoal grill is to use a charcoal starter to light the grill. Do not use lighter fluid! I don't know about you, but lighter fluid gives me the worst heartburn! OMG! We used lighter fluid at a tailgate one year because we thought it would be easier than using the charcoal starter in the parking lot. Nope! We could taste the lighter fluid all day. YUCK! Never again! Using a charcoal starter allows the flavor of the food to shine! Trust me, nobody wants to taste lighter fluid.

When ready to grill the chicken drumsticks, prepare the charcoal in the charcoal starter. Once the charcoal is lit and starting to gray on top, dump the coals on one half of the grill. Start the drumsticks over the charcoal and move to the other side once the skin starts to char. Rotate the chicken about every 5 minutes to prevent the skin from burning. Once the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 185ºF, brush the drumsticks liberally with the BBQ pepper jelly mixture.

While chicken is safe to eat at 165ºF, we found that these chicken drumsticks tasted better at 185ºF. Unlike white meat chicken, dark meat chicken pieces can cook a little longer and not dry out. Cooking these BBQ Pepper Jelly Chicken Drumsticks to an internal temperature of 185ºF breaks down all the connective tissue in the drumsticks and made them super tender and juicy.

If you are cooking these BBQ Pepper Jelly Chicken Drumsticks on a gas grill, follow the same method. Cook over direct and indirect heat for about 25 to 30 minutes.
