Copycat Outback Buttermilk Ranch Dressing

We recently ate dinner at Outback Steakhouse. It has been YEARS since we have eaten at Outback. I forgot how good it is. We each got a salad and split a couple of appetizers. SO good! The salad was great; especially the ranch dressing. OMG! I could drink that stuff. Chicken Legs asked me to try and copy the recipe so we could have it at home. I took a stab at it, and I think it is really close. We both loved it, so that is all that matters. It is a million times better than the bottled stuff! This is definitely our new go-to Ranch dressing recipe!

How to Make Outback Ranch Dressing at Home

This Copycat Outback Ranch Dressing is super easy to make. Simply whisk together some mayonnaise, buttermilk, ranch dressing mix, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne, and black pepper. Let the dressing sit in the refrigerator for a couple of hours and enjoy!

I used Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix and full-fat buttermilk. This is a thicker ranch dressing, so feel free to add a little more buttermilk if you want a thinner dressing.

Even though there is a little cayenne pepper in this Copycat Outback Ranch Dressing, it isn’t spicy. If you want a spicy buttermilk ranch dressing I would double the cayenne pepper.

Comments

  1. I make this for dipping vegetables every time we have company – they ALWAYS ask for the recipe, it’s that good!! Just made a fresh batch for thanksgiving 😊

  2. Very tasty, excellent dupe! Outback also has a great honey mustard dressing, like on the , like the one they use on the Alice Springs chicken dish. Have you duped it?

  3. This looks amazing! I’m trying to start the process of making my own condiments at home and we go through a lot of ranch LOL What are the measurements of 1 OZ of Ranch, please?

    1. I’ve always used whole milk instead of buttermilk and Kraft real mayo. I’ve used 2% a few times and could not taste a difference.

  4. This was exactly the recipe I needed! I’ve been missing Outback salads terribly and this has cured a small part my Quarantine woes! Made recipe as is and it is great! It’s addicting! A couple comments I have are the fact that Ranch mix has several variations. I’ve tried this with original and restaurant style and I like the restaurant style a bit more BUT Ranch mix is usually sold (at least in my area) as a 4 oz pkg so beware. I ordered the 1 oz pkgs online. Thank you for posting this!

  5. I’ve had Outback ranch hundreds of times over the last 20 years (usually on cheese fries) and this recipe is spot on. It’s crazy good and the ingredients are easily found at my grocery store. I’m stoked!

    1. I make this by the gallon each month. My kids won’t use any other ranch dressing. They put this S&it on Everything.

    1. I have only made this with buttermilk. You can make homemade buttermilk with 1 cup of milk and a Tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice. Let the mixture stand for about 5 minutes before using.

    1. But do you use a 1/2 cup of whole milk because the recipe only calls for a 1/2 cup of buttermilk..?

    2. I use organic milk that has anywhere from a 4 to 6 week expiration, and I have kept the dressing for a good month before I will make another batch.

  6. I have never had outback’s ranch but I did make this recipe. This dressing is amazing. I will definitely keep this in our fridge. Followed exact recipe, I didn’t change a thing. Love it!!

  7. This is a great recipe. I made it for a party and everyone loved it! I had people asking for the recipe. It is definitely a keeper and was a hit. Highly recommend.

  8. This is my new favorite ranch recipe. I personally like to add double the amount of onion and garlic powder. And I add a 1/2 tbsp of oil for a smoother texture. I love it!!!

  9. Thank you SO much for sharing this recipe ! Our daughters love this ranch from Outback – so much in fact – they would order it to go for $5.00 / 12 oz container ! We were getting tired of running there and paying for it. This recipe nails it ! A little planning to have the ingredients – and its a perfect Copycat !

    Blessings,
    Julie
