Nothing says football season like crispy fried chicken wings! Whip up a batch ASAP!

What is an Air Fryer?

An air fryer is basically a countertop convection oven. It circulates hot air around the food for faster cooking. The rapidly circulating air makes the food crispy, much like deep frying but with less oil. You also don’t need to preheat the air fryer, making the cooking time in the air fryer much faster than cooking in the oven.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Wings with Baking Powder

The key to getting the wings nice and crispy in the air fryer is coating the skin with baking powder before cooking. I had read about this technique online in the past and finally tested it out. Let me tell you, it works! I’m not sure about all of the science behind it but letting the baking powder soak into the chicken skin as it cooks in the air fryer. The baking soda gives the wings that yummy extra crispy skin.

The cooking process is very simple for these wings. Pat the chicken wings dry with some paper towels. Rub the wings with some garlic powder and baking powder. Let the chicken hang out in the refrigerator for at least one hour or up to overnight. When ready to cook the wings, season them with salt and pepper. Place wings in the air fryer basket standing them up on their ends next to the edge of the basket wall. Bake the wings and then toss in wing sauce in a large bowl.

Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • For best results, make sure not to overcrowd the basket. You need to leave a little room in the basket for the hot air to circulate around the chicken and cook it quickly.
  • Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook the wings in several small batches. If you crowd the air fryer basket, you won’t’ get crispy wings. Place the cooked wings on a baking sheet and keep warm in the oven at 200ºF.
  • I toss the wings in a bottle of Frank’s red hot sauce or Frank’s Buffalo Sauce.
  • You can use whole wings, drumettes, and/or flats.
  • You can season wings with any of your favorite seasonings before cooking. Lemon Pepper or a BBQ rub works great!
  • If you aren’t a fan of buffalo sauce, feel free to toss the wings in your favorite sauce. BBQ sauce or this sauce from our Sweet & Spicy Boneless Wings would also be delicious!
  • Are Air Fryer Chicken Wings low-carb/keto-friendly? Yes! Frank’s Wing Sauce contains zero carbs. There are 1.3 grams of carbs in the baking soda, so the wings are OK to eat on a low-carb diet.
  • Are Air Fryer Buffalo Wings gluten-free? Yes! All of the ingredients in this recipe are gluten-free.
  • Store leftover wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat the wings in the air fryer.

  1. Excellent! We’re watching the NFL Playoffs and these are perfect. I had to make several batches, and I spritz them with olive oil. I also made a batch of honey bbq ones! Thanks, Stephanie!

    1. I haven't tried this with chicken tenders, so I am not sure how it would work. Let us know how it turns out if you try it.

  2. Again – your recipes look amazing! Can't wait to try these out! We've done them twice in the air fryer – once not coated (they were good, not great), and once coated with seasoned flour (too heavy). I think the corn starch and garlic powder will be the perfect balance!
