The air fryer is one of my favorite small appliances in my kitchen. It is right up there with my slow cooker on MUST haves! It is amazing. We use it all the time. We make pizza, chicken fingers, and frozen snacks. They are all better cooked in the air fryer. This past week we made these delicious Air Fryer Chicken & Black Bean Taquitos for lunch. OMG! YUM! They are super easy to make and they tasted great. This is a great way to use up any leftover chicken you might have in the refrigerator. We love these for lunch, an easy dinner, parties, and easy meal prep for the week! Whip up a batch ASAP!
What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is basically a countertop convection oven. It circulates air around the food for faster cooking. The rapidly circulating air makes the food crispy, much like deep frying but without the need for oil. You also don’t need to preheat the air fryer, making cooking in the air fryer much faster than cooking in the oven.
How to Crispy Chicken Taquitos in the Air Fryer
As I said, this Mexican food dish is super easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. In a medium mixing bowl, combine chopped cooked chicken, salsa, black beans, and shredded cheese. Wrap corn tortillas in a damp paper towel. Microwave for 30 seconds. Place tortillas on a flat surface. Place a few tablespoons of chicken mixture down the center of the tortilla. Roll tortilla and place seam side down in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Spray the tortillas with some non-stick cooking spray or olive oil spray. Cook until the tops of the taquitos are golden brown.
Tips & Frequently Asked Questions
- What Air Fryer brand do you recommend? I have the Philips XXL Air Fryer and the Philips XL Air Fryer. I love them both, but I definitely recommend the Philips XXL Air Fryer. It is larger and can cook an entire meal at once.
- The basket in the Philips XL Air Fryer measures 7.5×7.5×3-inches
- The basket in the Philips XXL Air Fryer measures 9x9x3-inches
- Do I need to preheat the air fryer? No. You can preheat it for a few minutes if you like, but it isn’t necessary. Just season the steak, place it in the air fryer basket and cook until it reaches the desired temperature.
- I used corn tortillas. If you don’t like corn tortillas, you can use flour tortillas. I tested this recipe with flour tortillas and the cooking time is the same. The taquitos tasted great in the flour tortillas, so use either type or some of both!
- I like to use a rotisserie chicken for the cooked chicken in this recipe. You can use any cooked chicken that you have on hand. Cooked chopped chicken breast, chicken thighs, or chicken tenderloins all work fine.
- I used cheddar cheese, but pepper jack, Mozzarella cheese, or Monterey Jack would be great too!
- Our favorite store-bought salsas are Pace Picante Sauce, Mateo’s, Kylito’s, and Pace Restaurant-Style Salsa.
- Here is our recipe for Homemade Salsa: https://www.plainchicken.com/superior-grill-salsa/
- Feel free to add onions, green chiles, peppers, or olives to the chicken mixture.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Can You Freeze Taquitos?
- Can you Freeze Chicken Taquitos? YES! You can absolutely freeze these Chicken & Black Bean Taquitos. You can freeze them baked or unbaked.
- To freeze unbaked, assemble the taquitos and place on a baking sheet and freeze. Place the frozen taquitos in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. To bake the taquitos, bake as directed adding a few minutes to the cooking time.
- To freeze leftover taquitos, place on a baking sheet and freeze. Place the frozen taquitos in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. To reheat, slightly thaw and either pop in the microwave or put them in the air fryer frozen and bake at 350ºF for about 8 to 10 minutes. Just watch them and make sure they aren’t burning.

Can u use flour tortillas instead for a lower fat/carb content?
Love all of your recipes, and incidentally, I decided to try reheating some frozen chicken enchiladas, made from your recipe, in my air fryer. They seemed to be a little wetyer than what I wanted when I first made them (my fault, not yours). I nestled them inside a little boat that I made out of non-stick tin foil. Just enough to come up the sides and the ends. Popped them inside my 6 quart air fryer. Unbelievable! They crisped up better than I could ever have imagined. Threw them back in with some cheese on top for a minute and oh they were good.
Didn’t have chicken, so I used pulled pork. Yummo!
Sounds DELICIOUS!
Very tasty! Used flour shells secured with a toothpick. Topped with some guacamole and jalapeño slices. My air fryer is a small, 2.4 qt. though and it only took 5 minutes to cook three. The rest went into the freezer.
Loved the flavors here. I tried ,them but could not get them to stay rolled up. Every time I put one in the basket it sprang open. I even warmed the tortillas first. Resorted to standing them like tacos.
you can use toothpicks to secure the ends if you have trouble
So delicious!!!
Yum – i just made them with flour tortillas and loved them! So easy!
