Today I am sharing one of our go-to air fryer recipes – Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan. I love chicken parmesan, but I hate frying with oil in the house. Frying food makes the house smell, and I never know how to get rid of the oil. This Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan was just as crispy as regular fried chicken parmesan, but I didn’t use any oil!! Just a simple squirt of cooking spray.
One thing I love about air frying is that I don’t have to preheat the air fryer and it doesn’t heat up the whole house. This chicken was done in about 10 minutes. I just breaded the chicken cutlets, baked them, topped them with sauce and cheese, and finished them off for a few minutes.
What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is basically a countertop convection oven. It circulates hot air around the food for faster cooking. The rapidly circulating air makes the food crispy, much like deep frying but without the need for oil. You also don’t need to preheat the air fryer, making cooking in the air fryer much faster than cooking in the oven.
How to Make Chicken Parmesan in the Air Fryer
This chicken is super easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. Set up three shallow bowls or dishes. Place all-purpose flour in one, eggs in one, and combine Italian breadcrumbs, panko bread crumbs, and parmesan cheese in one dish.
Season chicken with salt and pepper, to taste. Coat chicken cutlets in flour, then dip in egg and coat in panko mixture.
Working in batches, place the breaded chicken in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Spray with cooking spray or olive oil. Cook for 6 minutes. Spread a few tablespoons of marinara sauce on top of each cutlet and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Cook until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF and the cheese is melted. Repeat with remaining chicken cutlets.
Tips & Frequently Asked Questions
- You can make your own chicken cutlets by slicing chicken breasts in half horizontally.
- If you use a regular chicken breast, you will need to increase the cooking time.
- The internal temperature of the chicken should be 165ºF.
- If using regular breadcrumbs, add some Italian seasoning and garlic powder.
- Garnish the cooked chicken with fresh basil.
- Store leftovers in airtight containers in the refrigerator.

I followed the recipe exactly and it came out perfect! We loved it. Thank you!
We just got a new oven… with built-in air fryer option! Anyone have any experience with this recipe using the oven feature? TIA!
an air fryer is just a convection toaster oven, so I suspect it would work just fine in the oven on air fryer option.
Can I just add the oil in the oil dispenser(1 tbsp) rather than use cooking spray?
Can you use frozen chicken? I forgot to thaw mine out and need to make a quick meal that we both love.
I made this tonight and it was awesome! Everyone loved it. I cooked it in batches and kept warm pieces in the oven at 250 degrees. It was tender, moist and delicious! I added this to my Air Fryer Make Again board on Pinterest. Thanks for a great recipe!
Excellent. However, definitely has to be thin breasts. I made the mistake of using a whole breast and had to finish it in the oven.
The recipe uses cutlets not full chicken breasts
I made the chicken parmesan but I used 3 chicken breasts and adjusted the time. It was so good that my daughter and I ate them before I could take a picture..I will make them again..Do you know the calorie count and other ingredients. I usually follow my calorie count as well as sodium..I didn’t see any listing..Sure would help me..Thank you for the recipe…
Could you tell me know long you adjusted the cooking time for 3 chicken breasts?
Thank you!
Amazing, quick and so delicious!
My air fryer says to always preheat it. How should I adjust to cooking time?
I would use your air fryer’s manual as a reference.
Question my air fryer has different settings such as bake, roast, air fry
When you state “cook” do you mean air fry?
I don’t know – my air fryer doesn’t have different settings. It is only an air fryer. I would assume to select air fryer, as this is an air fryer recipe.
This recipe is excellent!! Stays nice and crispy. Super simple and fast enough for a weeknight meal.
We loved this! Could you use just Panko crumbs?
sure
The recipe itself was great and easy to follow, and flavorful! However the cooking time for me wasn’t right. The chicken was very undercooked (could have just been my particular air fryer) and I followed the recipe 100%. I had to triple my cooking time to finally get it done, but it was delicious.
Could be that your chicken was too large. Did you use cutlets or slice the breasts in half? It works perfectly every time for use.
I cooked mine at 400
Can this be made in the oven instead of an air fryer?
Sure!
Would the time and temp be the same as the air fryer?
I tried this Sunday and it was absolutely delicious. Easy and fast to make. Loved it. I seldom review or comment on recipes but had to for this one. Yummy!
My new favourite recipe! So fast and easy! How did I live without an air fryer all my life??? Hubby loved it too!! Thanks!!
Any chance you can use a regular oil fryer? I do not own an air fryer.
sure
Awesome. Thank you. And I am obsessed with your website and recipes… I may or may not have ALL of them saved to my Pinterest. Thank you for sharing your secrets with us.

Doesn't sound like enough cooking time? I'm always afraid of raw chicken.
The cooking time is correct.
Can you do whole chicken breast or do you need to cut them in half for cooking?
You can use the whole breast, you will just need to increase the cooking time. I haven't made this with whole breasts, so I am not sure of the exact cooking time. If you slice them in half to make 2 cutlets per breast, you can follow the cooking times as listed above.
Where do you state in your prep/instructions to cut the breasts in half?!
The recipe uses chicken cutlet – not chicken breasts.
I’m almost 55 years old and never knew that a chicken cutlet is half a breast!
Made this today. Added three slices of pepperoni on top of sauce the added mozzarella on top. Came out perfect. This is now in my recipe rotation.
How many watts does your Air Fryer have?
