This recipe is from a friend of mine. She made this Peruvian Whole Chicken and posted it on Facebook. She couldn’t stop raving about how tender and juicy the chicken was. I immediately asked for the recipe! OMG! Let me tell you, this chicken is AMAZING! Loaded with tons of great flavors and super easy to make in the air fryer. This is hands down the best way to cook a whole chicken.
What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is basically a countertop convection oven. It circulates air around the food for faster cooking. The rapidly circulating hot air makes the food crispy, much like deep frying but without the need for oil. You also don’t need to preheat the air fryer, making cooking in the air fryer much faster than cooking in the oven.
How to Air Fry Whole Chicken
This is the easiest way to cook an entire chicken with only a few minutes of prep time. In a small bowl, combine vegetable oil or olive oil, lime juice, sugar, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, garlic, salt, and pepper. Brush the marinade inside the chicken cavity and all over the outside of the chicken. Next, tie the wings and legs with some kitchen twine. Place the chicken breast side down in the air fryer basket and bake. Flip the chicken and continue baking until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165ºF. Use an instant read thermometer to check the chicken.
Tips & Frequenly Asked Questions
- What Air Fryer do you recommend? I have the Philips XXL Air Fryer and the Philips XL Air Fryer. I love them both, but I definitely recommend the Philips XXL Air Fryer. It is larger and can cook an entire meal at once.
- The basket in the Philips XL Air Fryer measures 7.5×7.5×3-inches
- The basket in the Philips XXL Air Fryer measures 9x9x3-inches
- I was able to fit a 3.5-pound chicken in the basket of the air fryer. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need smaller chicken. If you have a larger air fryer, you can cook a larger chicken.
- Omit the sugar for a low carb and keto friendly recipe.
- You can season the chicken with anything you enjoy. Garlic butter, Italian seasoning, onion powder, bbq spice rub, or any of your favorite grilling marinades. If using a wet marinade, pat the chicken dry with paper towels before placing it in the air fryer. This will help you get extra crispy skin.
- The chicken needs to cook until it reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF. Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature. You may need to adjust the cooking time depending on the size of your chicken and your brand of air fryer.
- Let the chicken rest for at least 10 minutes before serving—this locks in moisture and ensure perfectly juicy meat.

Will lemon juice work instead of lime juice?
yes
How do you clean the inside of airfryer? Doesnt a lot of fat from chicken drop in there?
My Philips all goes in the dishwasher.
Can you use olive oil if I don’t have vegetable oil?
absolutely!
Wonder how this would work with Cornish game hens? Your thoughts, please?
You would just need to adjust the cooking time.
Just wanted to let you know about a typo so you can fix it. It says “dired” oregano. Have a great day & thanks for the recipe. I need to see if a chicken will fit in my 5 quart fryer.
Fixed it. Thanks!
What size air fryer did you use?
I linked to my air fryer in the recipe. I’m sure offhand what the measurements are.
