How to Make French Onion Smothered Chicken

This chicken is super duper easy to make. Place chicken tenderloins in a baking dish. Sprinkle with garlic salt and onion powder. Sprinkle the chicken with some shredded cheese. Spread french onion dip all over the chicken. Bake the chicken for 20 minutes. Remove the dish from the oven. Top the chicken with shredded cheddar cheese and french fried onion. Bake until the cheese has melted and the chicken is cooked.

  • Make sure to use a refrigerated sour cream based french onion dip such as Dean’s, Great Value, Barber’s, Heluva Good Dip, or Kraft. DO NOT use a jarred french onion dip from the chip aisle.
  • If you can’t find sour cream dip, you can use an equivalent amount of sour cream with some Lipton’s onion soup mix mixed in.
  • You can use any boneless chicken that you prefer – tenderloins, breasts, or thighs. You will need to adjust the cooking time if you use breasts or thighs.
    • Tenderloins will cook the fastest.
    • You can also cut chicken breasts into strips and they will cook about the same time as tenderloins.

What to Serve with Baked French Onion Chicken

This chicken is one of our all-time favorites. We serve this over rice with some green beans. It is also great over mashed potatoes or noodles. Whatever you serve it with, make sure to spoon some of the sauce/gravy in the baking dish over the chicken. You don’t want to let that go to waste. SO good!

  1. French onion chicken.
Good recipe. Used breasts, will slice
thinner next time, as increased cooking
time and torture with smells past 30 mins.

  2. Any concerns with the dip sticking to the shredded cheese and not being able to be easily spread? Could the dip be spread first then the shredded cheese applied?

  3. This sounds like an OMG dish. I don't know if we've used the fried onions for anything but green bean casserole – duh.
