How to Make BBQ Chicken Pastry Puffs

These chicken bites are super easy to make. Start with thawing the puff pastry sheets. While the pastry sheet is thawing, make the chicken mixture. In a medium bowl, stir together cooked chopped chicken, shredded cheddar cheese, cooked chopped bacon, barbecue sauce, and french fried onions. Season with salt and black pepper, if desired. Cut each piece of puff pastry dough into 9 squares. Top each square with the chicken mixture on the diagonal and bring the edges together. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Beat an egg and water in a small bowl with a fork or whisk. Brush the pastries with the egg wash and bake until golden brown. Garnish the baked puffs with some dried parsley and serve.

Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • I used rotisserie chicken for the cooked chicken. You can use any cooked chicken that you have on hand. Chicken breasts, chicken thighs, tenderloins will all work fine. You can use boiled chicken, baked chicken, or grilled chicken.
  • I use precooked bacon in this recipe. If you want to cook and crumble your own bacon, you will need about 4 ounces of bacon to equal a ¼ cup of chopped cooked bacon.
  • Here is the recipe for favorite Homemade BBQ saucehttps://www.plainchicken.com/homemade-bbq-sauce/
  • To keep the edges together during cooking:
    • Don’t overfill the puff pastry squares.
    • Wet the edges of the puff pastry with water to help seal the pastry dough edges together.
    • You can use toothpicks to help keep the edges together while baking.
    • If the puff pastry does open up during cooking, don’t panic. As soon as you take them out of the oven, gently press the edges together and they will stay together just fine after cooling. I had to do that with some of the puffs in this batch.
  • Feel free to add some onionspinach, or broccoli to the chicken filling.
  • Can BBQ Chicken Pastry Puffs be made in advance? Yes! You can assemble the pastry puff ahead of time and refrigerate until ready to bake.
  • Can BBQ Chicken Pastry Puffs be frozen? Yes! You can assemble the pastry puff ahead of time and place them in the freezer unbaked for later. To bake after freezing, simply add a few minutes to the cooking time below.

  1. I made these last night and they were great! We ate them for dinner with a salad but would be really good as an appetizer as suggested. The mixture was easy to make, and the puffs took a minute but we’re super easy. Mine came out perfectly with following the directions exactly. I will make again for sure!
