This Black Magic Cake is the best chocolate cake we’ve ever eaten! OMG! I found this recipe floating around on Reddit and had to give it a try. I am SO glad that I did! It is amazing! This cake is super simple to make and doesn’t require a mixer! The cake is super moist and loaded with tons of chocolate flavor. This recipe has quickly become our go-to chocolate cake recipe.

How to Make Black Magic Cake

This cake is super easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Grease and flour a Bundt cake pan. Sift together all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, unsweetened cocoa powder, and sugar in a bowl. In another large bowl, whisk together eggs, vanilla, milk, canola oil, and strong brewed coffee. Add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and stir to combine. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean or with a few crumbs. Cool the cake on a wire rack.

Place chocolate chips and heavy cream in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on HIGH for 30 seconds. Stir until smooth. Pour frosting over the cake and cut it into slices.

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease and flour a 12-cup Bundt cake pan.
  • Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, unsweetened cocoa powder, and sugar.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla, milk, and coffee.
  • Add dry ingredients to the bowl, and stir to combine.
  • Pour batter into the prepared cake pan.
  • Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean or with a few crumbs.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Remove cake from pan and cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Place chocolate chips and heavy cream in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir until smooth.
  • Spread ganache over cake and serve.

  1. Do you have to use coffee in the cake? I have atrial fibrillation and cannot have caffeine in any form, but this cake sounds wonderful. Can another liquid be substituted? If so, what is your recommendation for the liquid and how much, the same amount as the coffee?

    1. My sister has been making this cake for years. Peanutbutter frosting is a favorite around here and goes well on this cake. I believe she got the recipe out of the 1974 Pennsylvania State Grange cookbook.
