Pin This RecipeWhat is a Chicago Dog?
A Chicago hot dog is an all-beef hot dog served in a poppy seed bun and topped with:
- yellow mustard
- chopped white onions
- bright green sweet pickle relish
- dill pickle spear
- tomato slices or wedges
- pickled sport peppers
- dash of celery salt
That is a lot of stuff!! I wanted to serve fully loaded Chicago Dogs for our upcoming Labor Day get together, so I decided to bake them in a muffin tin! They turned out perfect! Easy enough to eat on the go or grab a couple and put them on a plate. Plus I eliminated the need for condiments lying around the table.
How to Make Hot Dogs in a Muffin Tin
These hot dog cups are super easy to make. Cut some refrigerated pizza dough into squares and press it in the muffin tin cups. Sprinkle the dough with poppy seeds, pressing them onto the dough. Chop hot dogs and toss with pickle relish, onion, and mustard. Divide the hot dog pieces between the muffin cups and bake. Remove the cups from the oven and top with the toppings – fresh onion, pickles, tomatoes, sport peppers, mustard, and celery salt.
Tips for Making Chicago Dog Cups
- I used Pillsbury canned refrigerated pizza dough.
- Can use any hot dog brand you prefer – Nathan’s, Hebrew National, Ball Park, Oscar Mayer.
- Can substitute turkey hot dogs for beef hot dogs if desired.
- If you can’t find sport peppers, you can substitute pickled serrano peppers, pickled jalapenos, or pickled pepperoncini peppers.
- I used petite kosher dill pickles. Feel free to use chopped regular dill pickles.
- Chicago Dogs do NOT use ketchup!
