This recipe was inspired by the Pecan Cobbler that I shared with you last month. I LOVE the pecan version so much that I decided to think of other flavor combinations. Chocolate is a must at the holidays, so I decided to give a Chocolate Cobbler a whirl. OMG! SO good! This is basically a giant chocolate lava cake. We happed to love chocolate lava cake, so this was a huge hit! Serve the cake warm with some ice cream and prepare to be wowed!
How to Make Chocolate Cobbler
This dessert is very easy to make. Whisk together sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, milk, cocoa powder, and vanilla. Pour melted butter into an 8×8-inch pan. Pour batter over melted butter. In a separate bowl, combine sugar, cocoa powder, and chocolate chips; sprinkle evenly over the batter. Slowly pour boiling water over the top of the cobbler and bake.
- Be careful not to overtake the cobbler or there won’t be any of the incredible molten chocolate sauce. Trust me, you want the sauce!!
- Feel free to add some mint to the cobbler mixture before baking. I would start with ¼ teaspoon – a little mint extract goes a long way!
What to Serve with Chocolate Cake
This dessert is best served warm out of the oven. We like to serve this with vanilla ice cream, but it would also be delicious with fresh whipped cream. Give this cake a try the next time you need an easy and decadent dessert! I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Chocolate Cobbler
Equipment:
Ingredients:
- 6 Tbsp butter melted
- 1¾ cups sugar divided
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup whole milk
- 6 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, divided
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup mini chocolate chips
- 1½ cups boiling water
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350ºF.
- In a medium bowl whisk together ¾ cup sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, milk, 2 Tbsp cocoa powder and vanilla.
- Pour melted butter into an 8×8-inch pan. Pour batter over melted butter.
- In a separate bowl, combine the remaining 1 cup of sugar, 4 Tbsp cocoa powder and chocolate chips; sprinkle evenly over the batter.
- Slowly pour boiling water over top of the cobbler.
- Bake 40 to 45 minutes, until top of the cobbler looks set. Do not overcook or there won’t be any yummy chocolate sauce.

This is amazing! Very weird to put together but extremely tasty! I had all the ingredients and it was easy to assemble.
This looks delicious! However, my daughter has a dairy allergy. Do you think it would work if I replace the butter with oil (or coconut oil) and the whole milk with almond milk?
I haven’t made this yet, but I use unsweetened plain almond milk for everything and I’ve never had any problems. Not sure about replacing the oil for butter.
