What does Crack mean?

If a recipe has crack in the title it means that it has cheddar, bacon, and ranch in the recipe. It all started with my Crack Dip way back in 2007. I made the dip for a Titans football game. Everyone went crazy over it. We couldn’t stop eating it and said it was like crack. The name stuck. The flavor combination is amazing. These crack chicken puff pastry bites are no exception. I’m obsessed!

How to Make Crack Chicken Pastry Puffs

These chicken bites are super easy to make. Start with thawing the puff pastry sheets. While the pastry sheet is thawing, make the chicken mixture. In a medium bowl, combine cooked chopped chicken, shredded cheddar cheese, cooked chopped bacon, and ranch dressing. Cut each piece of puff pastry dough into 9 squares. Top each square with the chicken mixture on the diagonal and bring the edges together. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Beat an egg and water in a small bowl with a fork or whisk. Brush the pastries with the egg wash and bake until golden brown. Garnish the baked puffs with some dried parsley and serve.

Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • I used rotisserie chicken for the cooked chicken. You can use any cooked chicken that you have on hand. Chicken breasts, chicken thighs, tenderloins will all work fine.
  • I use precooked bacon in this recipe. If you want to cooked and crumble your own bacon, you will need about 8 ounces of bacon to equal a ½ cup of chopped cooked bacon.
  • Here is the recipe for our Copycat Outback Ranch Dressinghttps://www.plainchicken.com/copycat-outback-ranch-dressing/
  • To keep the edges together during cooking:
    • Don’t overfill the puff pastry squares.
    • Wet the edges of the puff pastry with water to help seal the pastry dough edges together.
    • You can use toothpicks to help keep the edges together while baking.
    • If the puff pastry does open up during cooking, don’t panic. As soon as you take them out of the oven, gently press the edges together and they will stay together just fine after cooling. I had to do that with some of the puffs in this batch.
  • Feel free to add some onion, spinach, or broccoli to the chicken mixture.
  • Can Crack Chicken Pastry Puffs be made in advance? Yes! You can assemble the pastry puff ahead of time and refrigerate until ready to bake.
  • Can Crack Chicken Pastry Puffs be frozen? Yes! You can assemble the pastry puff ahead of time and freeze them unbaked for later. To bake after freezing, simply add a few minutes to the cooking time below.

  1. Great Child Friendly Fun Recipe! My 4-year-old can measure and mix all the ingredients together. He loves to use the pastry brush to “glue” them together with water, then paint them with the egg wash before baking. He is the chef and I am the sous-chef.
