Sausage Balls with Cheddar Bacon & Ranch

Stop what you are doing and make these Cracked Out Sausage Hash Brown Balls. O-M-G! Sausage balls loaded with hash browns, cheddar, bacon, and ranch. These are super simple to make and taste AMAZING! They are great for breakfast, lunch, dinner, tailgating, and parties. I never have any leftovers! Whip up a batch ASAP!

What does CRACK mean?

If a recipe has “crack” in the title it means that the recipe has cheddar, bacon, and ranch in the ingredients. It all started with my Crack Dip way back in 2007. I made the dip for a Titans football game. Everyone went crazy over it. We couldn’t stop eating it and said it was like crack. The name stuck.

According to the dictionary, the definition of crack is “of superior excellence or ability”. We think the flavor combination of cheddar, bacon, and ranch fits this definition! This recipe is most definitely of superior excellence!

How to Make Cracked Out Sausage Hash Brown Balls

These sausage balls are super simple to make. Place sausage, chopped bacon, ranch dressing mix, shredded hash browns, cheddar cheese, and Bisquick in the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Turn the mixer on low and mix until thoroughly combined. Scoop the mixture and form it into balls. Place the balls on a baking sheet and bake.

  • I use Jimmy Dean hot sausage. You can substitute turkey sausage if you prefer.
  • I used precooked bacon for the bacon in the balls. You can substitute turkey bacon to cut down on calories.
  • Here is our recipe for Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix: https://www.plainchicken.com/homemade-ranch-dressing-mix/
  • You can use thawed frozen shredded hash browns or refrigerated hash browns such as Simply Potatoes. Either works great.
  • For a gluten-free dish, use gluten-free Bisquick.
  • Can Sausage Balls be made in advance? Yes! You can make the balls ahead of time and refrigerate overnight before baking.
  • Can Sausage Balls be frozen? Yes! Assemble the balls and place on a baking sheet. Place in the freezer and freeze until frozen. Place the frozen balls in a freezer bag.
    • There is no need to thaw the balls before baking. Simply add a few minutes to the cooking time.

What to Serve with Sausage Balls

These sausage balls have quickly become a favorite at our house. These are great for breakfast with some eggs and cinnamon rolls. As an appetizer, we like to serve them with some Jalapeño Ranch Dip, salsa, or Homemade Ranch Dressing for dipping. SO good! They taste great hot out of the oven or at room temperature. I always have a batch in the freezer to pull out for a quick snack or breakfast. SO good!

  1. And there is no liquid at all? These sound really good. I’m just trying to be sure I understand the recipe before trying them! You use dry ranch mix and bisquick but no liquid?

  2. U don’t precook the sausage? Really? So you try to crumble a roll of raw pork sausage and mix with all other ingredients?

    1. Trust the process! Lol
I usually mix my sausage balls in my kitchenaid…just dump the sausage roll in along with the other ingredients and mix.
I use a small ice cream scoop to shape (like with cookies, it makes them even) then bake.. or freeze. 😁

      1. Is the cream cheese enough to keep all the ingredients mixed together? Do you brown the sausage first?
