I came across this Crazy Crust Apple Pie recipe in one of my old cookbooks. The crust is made from a batter, much like our favorite Crazy Crust Pizza recipe. We love the pizza, so I decided to give the pie a try. I am so glad that I did. SO good!
This dessert is a cross between a pie, a cobbler, and a cake. It is super easy to make and is crazy good. This would be great for any upcoming potlucks or holiday dinners. Top the pie with some ice cream and enjoy!
How to Make Crazy Crust Apple Pie
This pie is crazy easy to make. Perfect for when you want to make pie without all the fuss. Start with making the crust. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, melted butter, milk, and an egg. Pour the batter into a pie plate. Spoon the apple pie filling on top of the batter. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake.
- I recommend having all the ingredients at room temperature before making. Combining cold eggs and milk with warm melted butter can cause the egg to curdle. Take the milk and eggs out of the refrigerator about 20 or 30 minutes before making the pie.
- Can use any pie filling you prefer. I used apple, but this will work with any can of fruit pie filling.
- Feel free to add some pecans or walnuts to the pie.
- Can Crazy Crust Apple Pie be made in advance? Yes! You can make the pie ahead of time and store it in an air-tight container. It will keep 2 to 3 days.
- Can Crazy Crust Apple Pie be frozen? Sure! You can freeze the baked pie for a quick treat later. Thaw on the countertop for about one hour before serving.
Easy Dessert for the Holidays
This pie was a huge hit at our house. I have it on the menu for our Thanksgiving meal. I can-not-wait! We like to serve the pie slightly warm with some ice cream or whipped cream. If you really want to put this over the top, drizzle it with some caramel sauce. YUM!

I’m going to try this as a gluten free pie, using almond flour my mate cannot absorb wheat products.
Like the batter vs crust concept.
Is this made with a regular pie pan or a deep dish? If we want a deep dish should we double the recipe or maybe make 1 + 1/2 a recipe? I’m looking forward to trying this!
I made it in a deep dish pie pan.
I was wondering if I could use a different flour, to be able to make this recipe gluten free. Like oat flour, almond flour etc.
I have only made the recipe as written. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
What tyke / kind of pan did you use to make this in ?
pie plate or cake pan works fine
Looks good and I love easy! If I wanted to use fresh apples, would I need to change anything?
What a great idea! But unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
