Easy Slow Cooker Chicken & Gravy

I am a huge fan of crockpot meals, especially this time of year.  I don’t know about you, but I am really busy during the holiday season.  The last thing I want to worry about is dinner.   This recipe is super easy and tastes great. Chicken slow-cooked in chicken gravy mix, cream of chicken soup, and chicken broth. Serve the shredded chicken over rice and dinner is done. I used Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice, and dinner was ready in less than 5 minutes after walking in the door!  Can’t beat that any time of year!

How To Make Chicken & Gravy in the Crockpot

This Crockpot Chicken & Gravy is SUPER easy to make. Simply place the chicken in the slow cooker, Season the chicken with salt and pepper. I sometimes use garlic salt or seasoned salt instead of plain salt. Once the chicken is seasoned on both sides, whisk together the gravy packets and soup. Pour the soup over the chicken and cook.

Once the chicken is cooked, shred it with two forks right in the slow cooker. We like to serve the chicken over white rice. Feel free to use cooked brown rice, mashed potatoes, or egg noodles. Heck, you could even serve this over some Texas toast for a chicken & gravy sandwich. If you are eating gluten-free, I think this would be great over cauliflower rice or spaghetti squash.

I used chicken gravy mix. Feel free to use any packet of gravy mix you prefer. If you want a thinner gravy, add about ½ to 1 cup of water or chicken broth to the soup mixture. Adding some water/chicken broth is a great way to stretch the gravy. The slow cooker gravy is the BEST part of the whole recipe!

This Crockpot Chicken & Gravy is a favorite in our house. It is so simple to make and tastes great! I always have the ingredients on hand so we can make this yummy chicken! As I said, we serve the chicken and gravy over rice. We also love to make some green beans or asparagus to go with this chicken. Ingredients:

  • 3 to 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 (10.75-oz) can cream of chicken soup
  • 2 (0.87-oz) envelopes of chicken gravy mix
  • 1/2 cup water or chicken broth, optional
  • hot steamed rice

Instructions:

  • Place chicken in the slow cooker and season with salt and pepper, if desired.
  • Whisk together soup, gravy mix, and water (if using). Pour over chicken.
  • Cover crock-pot and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours.
  • Before serving break the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces. Serve over hot steamed rice.

Notes:

Do NOT make the gravy. You are only using the dry mix.
Can use chicken thighs or tenderloins in place of chicken breasts.
Can use frozen chicken breasts.
You will need to cook on the higher end of the cooking time if using frozen chicken.
Can add frozen vegetables to the mixture.
To lower the sodium, use Healthy Choice Cream of Chicken Soup and Lower Sodium Chicken Gravy Mix.

  2. This looks like a delicious recipe. FYI- there is no gluten in rice, but there is gluten in most chicken gravy mixes (unless you buy the Thrive brand). To make this recipe gluten free, you can buy Thrive Market’s gravy mix, if you find it, or use 3 TBL of your own GF chicken gravy powder (made with 3 TB chicken bouliouun granuels, 3/4 cup plus 1 TBL of 1 for 1 GF flour, and 1/4 t pepper)

  3. We pour this recipe over Green Giant Riced Veggies, Cauliflower Medley, Frozen, 10 oz from war mart. We use no sodium or low sodium chicken broth. This is our first time making this recipe and we love it. We will have this real soon again.

    1. This is a winner! I goofed when I bought ingredients to try this, and forgot the soup. I improvised with what I had on hand and used sour cream instead. Best ooppss ever! So so so so good! I tossed in frozen veggies and this was perfect!

  4. I had 5 lbs of frozen chicken that I had to use, so I brought out “the big” crockpot. Lol I used 3 envelopes of gravy mix, 2 cans of cream of chicken soup and 1 can of cream of enoki and Cremini mushroom soup (I didn’t even know Campbell’s made this!) I put about a 3/4 to a cup of chicken broth and about a cup of sliced mushrooms in, because I had them in the fridge. 6 hours on low, shredded it and added egg noodles to it. Family went crazy over it.

  5. Hi Steph, I have high blood pressure so can’t use prepacked gravy mixes due to the sodium content. What can I substitute for that?

    1. low or no sodium chicken broth and cornstarch, i would make a slurry and add it in when it’s done to thicken it up 😀 you can make any sauces that way alone or added to things like this. just my 2 cents 😀

  6. I made this as it reminded me of the lunch lady meals when I was in 4th grade.
    The recipe did not disappoint. Served it over mashed potatoes with a side of steamed mixed veggies.
    Will definitely make this again.

  7. I have made this recipe several times over the last year and pulled it out again at husband’s request. As written the recipe is SO GOOD! I prefer to use the Pacific brand of Cream of Chicken or Mushroom soup, Simply Organics Chicken Gravy mix, and Simply Organics French Onion Dip mix. This is just personal preference. I’ve made it using generic brands and other popular brands and the recipe is just as good. I like to double the amount of soup and add some stock to make a thinner gravy and add vegetables like mushrooms, peas & carrots, and cauliflower rice and use a mix of skinless, boneless chicken tenders & thighs. Husband loves it over rice and it’s really good with extra wide egg noodles. My in-laws had leftovers warmed and served over biscuits which is what I will try next as they raved about it. You really can’t go wrong with this recipe. I always have these recipe ingredients in my freezer/pantry in the Autumn & Winter months so I can pull a quick dinner together in the morning and have it ready by dinner time or make it the evening before and cook overnight so we have a hearty lunch for snowy days.

      1. Made this with only 2 chicken breasts, everything else the same, with just water; low heat for 4.5hrs, it was SO Delicious!! I actually went back for seconds which I rarely ever do LOL. COOKING THIS AGAIN TONIGHT, but I’m adding fresh mushrooms. 🤔

The only thing different that I did was add a pkg. of Lipton onion soup mix and red pepper flakes when I mixed the ingre. together. It was sooo very good !   19. LOVE this recipe and how you can really customize. I add spinach to the slow cooker in the last half hour of cooking to get in some veggies for the kids. My whole family loves this.

  20. Followed the recipe exact minus serving over rice. Instead I boiled up finely chopped carrots, made my home made whole wheat pizza dough and made hand held mini pies by using a muffin tin. Kids loved it and my husband took the cold leftover pies for work. Next time I would add the carrots and some celery at the beginning of cooking and some frozen peas at the end.

  22. I’ve made this before, it was delicious! I am making it this weekend, double batch. I love it best over rice with some LeSeuer baby peas on the side lol. With the leftovers I am going to make a chicken pot pie. I’ll add some peas and carrots, thicken the gravy a little if needed, and bake it in a pie crust.

    1. I’ve never tried this in a pressure cooker, so I do not know what adjustments (if any) would need to be made.

  23. I’ve made this with jarred liquid gravy and dry mix. They are both good, not a noticeable difference.

    1. Made this today. Had Turkey gravy packet and only onion soup mix. Half a pack. I doubled the soup can. Added carrots. Sooooo goooood!!! My freeloading adult kids(lol), loved it!!! Also great over biscuits! Jk, I love those freeloaders!

  29. Has anyone cooked this on high? Instead of low for 4-6hrs?
    Was just wondering how long it would be on high, half the time? 2-3 hours? Just don’t want to over cook the chicken (it’s room temp)… But I’m making it now, and am starting it later then I would have liked to… Haha an would rather now eat dinner at 10pm tonight lol

    1. I did the same thing but doubled the gravy mix and used one can cream of chicken with herbs and one with mushrooms. Amazing!!

  34. Well, I didn’t have the gravy mix packets so I used a chicken marsala packet (McCormick) wow! don’t think it could’ve been any better.

  35. I have made this 2x now and it is a certified hit with husband. He loves it and now asks for it weekly! The first time I made it I followed the directions as written and it was delicious. The second time I made it I used 2 packets of gravy mix, one packet of French Onion Dip mix (all from the Simply Organics brand of seasoning packets. No other seasonings added), and extra broth for a thinner gravy. Also very good! I was able to make this in a 4.5 quart oval slow cooker. Next time I am going to try making a chicken & rice soup with the leftovers. I think that would be really good, too.

    1. You can add them at the beginning or about 30 minutes before serving – just depends on how soft you want them.

  39. I used one huge, really huge chicken breast to serve my husband and me…so I used one can of cream of mushroom soup and one pack of turkey gravy mix, four and a half hours on low. When it was done I shredded/cut up the chicken and added a bunch of frozen peas and cooked for another fifteen minutes on high. Yummy on rice!

  42. This was a simple recipe to follow, smelled great while it was cooking, and everyone loved it. I used homemade cream of chicken instead of store-bought canned version. So good! My husband asked me to put this recipe into regular “rotation” for our family dinners.

  43. Are we adding water to make condensed soup into soup? I doubled the recipe so to be on the safe side, I added 1 can of water for 1 can of condensed soup and kept the other can condensed. But I did add a can of chicken broth as well…(thinking back, maybe I should’ve just stuck to chicken broth and not add any water). its cooking now, so fingers crossed it wont be too “soupy”… I’m in charge of “family sunday dinner” this week.     1. You do NOT add a can of water to the soup. Only use the can of soup. The only liquid is the 1/2 cup of water or broth listed in the recipe.

  45. Hi. I’d like to send this with my husband to bring on a hunting trip. Can I mix everything up and put in crockpot so all he has to do is plug it in? I’d need to mix it up on Friday and he’d cook it Saturday. Will this be ok?

    Just ate my first serving of the Crockpot Chicken and Gravy. Yum! I WILL be making it again! I wonder if it would work as well if I cut the raw chicken into cubes (or nuggets) before dropping them into my crockpot. I only have an old, what I’ll call an “upright” crockpot – is that 3.5 quarts? Today I used chicken tenders, layering the first few facing one direction and the rest layered on top at right angles to the first. They seemed to cook fine (I used five hours on low) but stirring was almost ‘til the chicken was pretty well cooked. If the original pieces were smaller and I could stir in the gravy ingredients, all the flavors would be more evenly distributed. Whaddya think?

  48. Easy and great tasting recipe! I added spinach, celery an carrots to the dish at the end to give it some color and served over rice—-and it was a big hit with my husband and kids. Makes good leftovers and also goes well over egg noodles.

  51. I have eaten crockpot chicken for 60 years, and 3 generations and I can honestly say this recipe is the best tasting one of them all. Super easy to make, and very simple. This thanksgiving we are going to make this instead of our traditional turkey.   52. This was definitely an easy meal and it tasted alright for an easy meal. Chicken is tender, which is awesome because my 4yr old will only eat super soft meats!! However, it tastes of artificial chicken flavoring. This isn’t my fave, but I can definitely build on this. Thank you.

  54. I’m usually not a “packet” type cook , but six months of cooking has opened my mind.
    My family loved this so much. I left the slow cooker uncovered for a half hour or so after it was done to thicken it up. I served it with canned biscuits.

  60. This is probably the easiest meal I’ve ever made, which is saying a lot. My father really enjoyed it!! My son wanted it with baked potatoes which I made in a separate Crock-Pot. He and I weren’t as impressed as my elderly father. It had a sweet flavor which is somewhat off putting. I used Campbell’s cream of chicken and Walmart brand chicken gravy mix. I’ll definitely give this recipe a go again with cream of mushroom and probably McCormick chicken gravy mix and season the chicken with Badia Complete Seasoning as that usually goes extremely well with anything chicken. My guess is that the sweetness came from Walmart chicken gravy mix because they’re constantly changing everything that they offer that’s remotely good.
    I think rice would have been much better than with baked potatoes, so I’ll do that next time as well.

    Thanks Much & I’ll be back for more easy recipes!! Especially soft meals because my 83yro dad has no teeth and has a difficult time eating most things. I’m still learning what to cook so he’ll be able to easily chew and enjoy a variety of foods.

  62. Dumb question but do I make the gravy packets like you normally do? Add the one cup for each packet and than add it to the soup? Or do I add dry packets of gravy and not add any water unless I want to add the half water or broth?

    1. Sounds like you should use 3 since you say they are really big. You can’t go wrong with either amount. So it would just be a personal preference.

    1. I've only made this with the packets of gravy. You can certainly try it with the canned gravy. I'm sure it will still taste fine.

  64. Making this tomorrow! I have 3 frozen chicken breast, so going to use 2 cans of soup and 2 packets of gravy and add in frozen veggies right away in the beginning. Do you think that the veggies will get too mushy in a crock pot for 8-ish hours? I could cook separately and add in later, but so much easier to do in the beginning.

  66. This is absolutely wonderful. I was concerned about the gravy being too salty but it wasn't at all that way. I didn't break up the chicken into smaller pieces. just kept the pieces whole. Served the gravy over mashed potatoes. So easy and so tasty. This is a winner!

    1. I used my instant pot and shredded with a hand mixer. My chicken was frozen but it was done in 30 minutes. I cooked and shredded the chicken then added the other ingredients to let them warm.

  77. This recipe looks GREAT, I am planning on making it for dinner tomorrow. Just one question, (might be a dumb one) but the gravy packet says to mix the contents with water, did you do that, or just dump the powder in with the chicken & soup?

      1. My experience is it just kind of dissolves but it wouldn’t hurt anything if you wanted to cut it off.

        1. It just depends on how soft you want the veggies. The longer you cook them, the softer they will be.

    1. Simple, easy and delicious. This was a big hit with my fiancé and he is a picky eater! I use one pack of HEB gravy and one pack of pioneer chickens and herbs gravy and cook for 6 hrs for maximum tenderness. Omg yum!!!

    2. Made this the other day, used healthy request soup and one regular and one reduced sodium gravy packet. I thought it was so-so right out of the crockpot but the leftovers were *amazing* a day and a half later. If you have time, make it ahead, especially if making it with less salt. Recipe will definitely be in my regular rotation! I was totally happy eating the chicken and gravy with just broccoli on the side, without rice or potatoes. Leftover chicken, if you’re lucky enough to have some, would definitely be great for chicken salad if you rinse off the gravy.

      1. This recipe is simple to follow and absolutely delicious. I make mashed potatoes and veggies on the side and even the kids can’t get enough. Kid approved. Mom approved!

      2. If you double the recipe including the amount of chicken would you still cook it on low for 4 to 6 hours?

        1. Yes, anytime I cook chicken in the crockpot (Which is a lot!) I cook the chicken the same amount of time, does not matter the amount of chicken I am cooking. The only time that it would matter obviously is if the chicken didn’t all fit in the crockpot comfortably…..

        1. Keep in mind there is moisture that will come out of frozen veggies. May thin gravy. I personally would cook first then drain liquid before adding.

    1. Stupid question…I want to make this but I don’t have gravy mix. Only have a jar of turkey gravy. You think I could substitute? Or wait and go to store.

      1. I’ve only made this with the dry packet of mix. I can not say how it works with liquid gravy. You can certainly give it a try, but it won’t be like the recipe in the photos.

  79. I just tried this recipe for dinner and it was both delicious and simple!! My favorite kind of recipe. I have tried a number of your recipes and I'm never disappointed! I enjoy following your blog and look forward to new recipes everyday.

    1. So I am in the process of cooking this. I only had 1 pack of chick gravy on hand so I substituted a Turk gravy pack. I Plan on adding frozen pees & carrots at the end then serving over white rice. I’m anticipating good results! lol Thank you for the share! I will update 😉

    2. I followed the recipe to a T the first time. Although it was good, I felt it needed a little more flavor. The next time I tried this with one packet of chicken gravy and one packet of Turkey gravy. I also added about a half a packet of dry ranch dip, a little tarragon, uncle Chris’s seasoning and a can of veggies. Then served over orzo pasta! Delish!

  80. Kerry – I did mix the cooked rice in with the sauce after the chicken cooked, but you can just serve the chicken and gravy over the rice if you prefer.

    1. I used pack of Turkey gravy mix, and a dry pack of onion soup mix. I’ll let you know how it turns out. It’s all I had on hand.

      1. My husband has done onion soup mix. It’s just a different taste. Without the onion mix it just makes it more mild. Just depends on the taste you like and I believe the onion mix tenderize the chicken more.

  81. Just found this recipe, which looks lovely.

    Kind of a dumb question, but is the rice going into the crockpot or are you serving the contents of the crock pot on a bed of rice.

    The picture looks like the rice is mixed in the sauce, so I wasn't sure.

  82. muststartover – you could use frozen chicken. Just cook it a little longer – 7-8 hours. Perfect for a work day.

  83. Shannon – I used boneless skinless chicken breasts. Do not cook them before you put them in the crockpot. The crock pot will cook them for you. This made enough for 2-3 people – just depends on how big the chicken breast are.

    Do you cook the chicken breasts first? I assume these are boneless, skinless chicken breasts.
