I am a huge fan of crockpot meals, especially this time of year. I don’t know about you, but I am really busy during the holiday season. The last thing I want to worry about is dinner. This recipe is super easy and tastes great. Chicken slow-cooked in chicken gravy mix, cream of chicken soup, and chicken broth. Serve the shredded chicken over rice and dinner is done. I used Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice, and dinner was ready in less than 5 minutes after walking in the door! Can’t beat that any time of year!
How To Make Chicken & Gravy in the Crockpot
This Crockpot Chicken & Gravy is SUPER easy to make. Simply place the chicken in the slow cooker, Season the chicken with salt and pepper. I sometimes use garlic salt or seasoned salt instead of plain salt. Once the chicken is seasoned on both sides, whisk together the gravy packets and soup. Pour the soup over the chicken and cook.
Once the chicken is cooked, shred it with two forks right in the slow cooker. We like to serve the chicken over white rice. Feel free to use cooked brown rice, mashed potatoes, or egg noodles. Heck, you could even serve this over some Texas toast for a chicken & gravy sandwich. If you are eating gluten-free, I think this would be great over cauliflower rice or spaghetti squash.
I used chicken gravy mix. Feel free to use any packet of gravy mix you prefer. If you want a thinner gravy, add about ½ to 1 cup of water or chicken broth to the soup mixture. Adding some water/chicken broth is a great way to stretch the gravy. The slow cooker gravy is the BEST part of the whole recipe!

Crockpot Chicken & Gravy
Equipment:
Ingredients:
- 3 to 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 1 (10.5-oz) can Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup
- 2 (0.87-oz) envelopes of chicken gravy mix
- 1/2 cup water or chicken broth, optional
- hot steamed rice
Instructions:
- Place chicken in the slow cooker and season with salt and pepper, if desired.
- Whisk together soup, gravy mix, and water (if using). Pour over chicken.
- Cover crock-pot and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours.
- Before serving break the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces. Serve over hot steamed rice.
Notes:
- Do NOT make the gravy. You are only using the dry mix.
- Can use chicken thighs or tenderloins in place of chicken breasts.
- Can use frozen chicken breasts.
- You will need to cook on the higher end of the cooking time if using frozen chicken.
- Can add frozen vegetables to the mixture.
- I suggest using Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup in this dish to control the sodium.

I am making this in a few minutes but need to know do I use the can of cream of chicken soup plus a can of water?
just the can of soup – enjoy!
This is absolutely wonderful. I was concerned about the gravy being too salty but it wasn't at all that way. I didn't break up the chicken into smaller pieces. just kept the pieces whole. Served the gravy over mashed potatoes. So easy and so tasty. This is a winner!
so glad you liked it!
I really want mushrooms… thinking of using 4 chicken breasts, a can of cream of chicken, a can of cream of mushroom and 2 gravy chicken packets?
Sounds good to me!
This was so good! I doubled the recipe and added some frozen mixed veggies. Served over homemade biscuits…we loved it!
Janet – love your changes!
I make a similar recipe , one packet of onion soup, I can of mushroom soup , milk or water, chicken breast and crockpot till it shreds and we serve it over creamy mashed potatoes :} definatly gonna try this one :}
Becca – I think peas and carrots sound great. Enjoy!
I'd love to make this an all in one meal. I plan on making it today for some friends who have a baby who recently got hearing aides. They've been busy trying to help her adjust so the easier, the better. I wanted to add some vegetables, but what would you suggest? I was thinking carrots and peas at least..
Haley – I think it would taste just fine with either Cream of Chicken or Mushroom. Enjoy!
This looks delicious! I have one problem: I don't have chicken gravy mix! I only have mushroom gravy mix. How would that taste with Cream of Chicken OR Cream of Mushroom?
Thanks,
Haley
Paige – I think it would be great with mashed potatoes. Enjoy!
Making this tonight, and was wondering if it tastes good with mashed potatoes?
CheJohnson – absolutely. Cook it on high for 2-3 hours. Enjoy!
Could you cook it on high to cut the time a little.
I used my instant pot and shredded with a hand mixer. My chicken was frozen but it was done in 30 minutes. I cooked and shredded the chicken then added the other ingredients to let them warm.
Awesome, thanks so much! I figured that was correct, glad to hear I didn't mess it up 🙂
Jess – just leave it thick – undiluted
Enjoy!
Making this tonight 🙂
One question: do you dilute the soup with water or milk as directed on the can or just leave it thick?
Thanks 🙂
