Pin This RecipeStop what you are doing and make these Delmonico Potatoes. They are simply AMAZING. I made these last week and Chicken Legs has already requested them again this week. They are that good.
These potatoes can be made ahead of time and refrigerated until you are ready to bake them. They are perfect with everything – grilled chicken, pork chops, steaks, anything! They taste equally delicious leftover the next day.
These Delmonico Potatoes are different from your everyday potato casserole. First, there is no cream of anything soup. Secondly, the potatoes are topped with a quick homemade cheese sauce. The cheese sauce is EVERYTHING! I could pour it on almost anything and love it!
This is our new “go-to” potato casserole for the moment. It will take a really good recipe to top this one! YUM!

My family loved it! Really good snd easy to make!
Going to try this alongside one my momma always made when we were kids. I think for color and flavor pick-up I’m going to add scallions and some bacon. Almost like a loaded baked potato.
Sounds delicious!
If you double recipe, can you put in same pan? Will it cook through in other words?
It would take longer to cook if you double it in the same pan.
Could you add instructions on making these in a crockpot when you need the oven for other things?
Can you make this in a crockpot and how long would you cook it???
What brand hash browns did you use? They appear to be a thinner cut.
I use Ore-Ida or Great Value
Have you ever done these in a crock pot? Would love to have that version for times when oven space is at a premium!!!
This would be fine in the slow cooker.
Fantastic and super easy. I added finely chopped chives to the top after baking just to fancy it up and add a bit of extra flavor. Not needed but a nice extra touch.
This cheese sauce also makes outstanding mac and cheese. I poured it over al dente cooked pasta, put it in a casserole dish, topped it with buttered crackers and baked in the oven until the crackers were just lightly browned and everybody went nuts over it.
I apologize. For some reason I didn't see it, as much as I looked! Now I'll file it. It sounds so delicious.
I made them with a combination of cheddar and pepper Jack cheeses. Delicious! Thanks for the recipe.
My mom is allergic to cheddar. What's the best substitute for the cheddar cheese, or will that not work?
I think any cheese would work. Gouda? Swiss? Monterey Jack?
I'm going to make these yummy looking potatoes this week. Do you use sharp or mild cheddar? I can't wait to try them!
I usually use sharp, but either is just fine. Enjoy!
I used half mild and half sharp.
My family is not a fan of dry mustard. Is there something you could recommend we substitute it with or would it be missed if I left it out of the recipe??
I don’t think you can taste it when it’s used in a recipe like this. But, I’m sure you could just omit it and would be fine.
How do you think this would work if I added a small chopped onion? Should I saute it first or will baking it do the trick?
Thanks!
I think baking would do the trick, surely it would be softened in an hour. Enjoy!
How far ahead can I make the cheese sauce? Would it hold on the stove a few hours and then re-heat before putting it on the potatoes?
I haven't tried that. You could assemble the potatoes and just refrigerate them until you are ready to bake.
how far ahead can I make the cheese sauce? Will it hold on the stove top a few hours and reheat?
My cheese didn’t melt and didn’t mix with the milk just got rubbery
Try a different brand. I also recommend grating the cheese yourself instead of using a bag of cheese. Bags of cheese contains an anti-clumping agent that can hinder melting.
Use “New York” style sharp cheddar. It melts like Velveeta. Brand doesn’t matter.
I make this for holidays – goes fantastic with ham. I do add some freshly grated nutmeg and some lemon zest – really sparks it up.
I'll try that next time! Sounds delicious ????
If you can't find preshredded potatoes, do you think it would work if you shredded your own?
I don't see why that wouldn't work. Enjoy!
The pre-shreded potatoes are usually near the french fries in the freezer section – sometimes called southern hashbrowns.
Do you think this would freeze well?
I don't see why not. I haven't frozen this casserole, but it should be fine.
I made these last night for supper and everyone loved them! Thanks for the yummy recipe!
YAY! SO glad they were a hit!!
These look sooo good! Thanks!
What kind of milk did you use – whole, 2%, skim?
I used whole milk
Thank you. I am getting ready to make them now 🙂
Would this not be considered hash brown casserole
I was also wondering about the pre-shredded cheese. Seems like when a recipe calls for X number of cups, if I use a two-cup package of cheese, it is way too much cheese and is thick and gloopy. I usually ruin mac n cheese.
I used pre-shredded cheese from Costco and it was fine
CAN YOU USE PRE-SHREDDED CHEESE OR DO YOU NEED TO SHRED IT YOURSELF? THANKS!
I used pre-shredded, but you can shred it yourself if you prefer.
Wondering if I could add shredded chicken lol
Don't see why not.
Can cauliflower be used and if so would it need to be cooked a bit beforehand?
I haven't substituted cauliflower in this dish, so I can't advise you on how to change the casserole. Good luck!
Hash browns + cheese = it has to be delicious and so easy.
Yesss!!! These look amazing! Thanks for always filling my inbox with great recipes & cute kitties =^,^=
Jett
These look fantastic! Can these be made with frozen hashbrown potatoes, not the shredded kind, since that is all I have?
I'm sure that would be fine. Enjoy!????
