Easy Slow Cooker Chicken Dinner

This Slow Cooker Sweet Garlic Chicken is one of our favorite weeknight meals. It has a great blend of flavors and is super simple to make. Just dump everything in the crockpot and let it do all the work. Chicken simmered in cider vinegar, ginger ale, soy sauce, and ginger. Seriously delicious! Let the chicken cook while you are at work. When you are ready to eat, quickly shred the chicken and whip up some Teriyaki Green Beans. SO much better than takeout. Leftovers are equally delicious! Add this to your menu ASAP!

How to Make Slow Cooker Sweet Garlic Chicken

This chicken is effortless to make. Simply place the chicken in the crockpot. Whisk together apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, ginger ale, soy sauce, minced garlic, ginger, onion powder, garlic powder, BBQ seasoning, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes. Pour the sauce over the chicken. Cover and cook on LOW for about 6 hours. Shred the chicken with two forks. Add some cornstarch to thicken up the sauce and enjoy!

  • You can use any boneless chicken that you prefer. Breasts, tenders, thighs all work fine.
  • Feel free to add some vegetables to the mixture – bell peppers, onions, asparagus, or broccoli would be good.
  • Can I use frozen chicken? Yes! You can add the chicken to the slow cooker frozen.
  • Can I cook the chicken on HIGH? Yes. The chicken will take 2 or 3 hours on HIGH, just depending on your slow cooker.
  • To make a freezer meal for later, simply place chicken and sauce ingredients in a gallon freezer bag. Place the bag in the freezer and pull it out when you are ready to cook. You do not need to thaw the contents of the freezer bag before placing it in the slow cooker.
  • Is Sweet Garlic Chicken gluten-free? For a gluten-free dish, use a gluten-free soy sauce and BBQ seasoning.

What to Serve with Sweet Garlic Chicken

We like to serve the chicken over rice. Don’t forget to spoon all that yummy sauce over the chicken. It is too good to let it go to waste! This would also be good over noodles, potatoes, or quinoa. I sprinkled the chicken bowl with some extra red pepper flakes for a bit of heat. That is totally optional, but we really enjoyed it!

Ingredients:

  • 2 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • cup cider vinegar
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup ginger ale
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp bbq seasoning
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 Tbsp corn starch
  • 2 Tbsp water

Instructions:

  • Place chicken in slow cooker.
  • Whisk together apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, ginger ale, soy sauce, minced garlic, ginger, onion powder, garlic powder, BBQ seasoning, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes. Pour sauce over chicken.
  • Cover the slow cooker. Cook on LOW for 6 hours.
  • Shred chicken with two forks. Combine corn starch and water. Add to the slow cooker and cook on HIGH for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, until the sauce has slightly thickened.
  • Serve the shredded chicken over rice, potatoes, or pasta.

  1. It looks like maybe the Asian seasoning from McCormick has been discontinued. Have you come across a seasoning that would be a good substitute? This recipe sounds so good!

McCormick Asian Seasoning has been discontinued and the description says its ginger, garlic, sesame seed and chili pepper. 5-Spice Powder is a blend of cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise, and Szechwan peppercorns so I don't think it would be the same. Trying this with ground ginger, garlic powder, sesame oil, and chili powder.

  3. When you say Asian seasoning what does that mean? and where do you get pomegranate balsamic vinegar? it sounds delish but I don't know where to get half of the ingredients 🙁

    1. McCormick has an Asian seasoning. Pomegranate balsamic vinegar will be with the regular balsamic vinegar. I got it all at Publix. I'm sure Walmart, Target and other grocery stores carry these ingredients too.

  4. I threw everything into a Ziploc bag and cooked it overnight without freezing. Added soy sauce, red pepper flakes, and pureed ginger because I couldn't find the Asian spice. Overall nice flavor hoping serving it over mashed potatoes or quinoa will work better texture wise.

  5. I think I did something wrong. Does cooking it in a crockpot liner affect cooking speed? I cooked it frozen on low for 5 1/2 hours and it was really dry.

  6. I love this freezer meal series, so thank you! One question for all the meals: you say to freeze the recipe in a gallon-size Ziplock bag. Once it's all frozen and you want to put it in the Crock Pot, how do you get it out of the bag? Isn't it all kinda frozen to the bag??? Dumb question, I know.
