How To Make French Onion Broccoli Cheese Casserole

This is hands-down our favorite broccoli casserole. It is super delicious and SUPER easy to make with only 5 simple ingredients. Broccoli, cream of mushroom soup, french onion dip, cheddar cheese, and french fried onions. I used fresh broccoli florets, but you could also use frozen broccoli florets.

To make this broccoli casserole, simply mix everything together and bake. It literally takes about 5 minutes to assemble.

One very important note about this French Onion Broccoli Cheese Casserole. This recipe uses a cup of French onion dip. You want to use the sour cream based French onion dip found in the refrigerated section at the grocery store. I prefer the flavor of Kraft brand, but Heluva Good Dip, Barbers, Dean’s or the store brand will work great too! Just make sure it is sour cream based and not the jarred stuff in the chip aisle. SO important!!

Can I Make Broccoli Casserole in Advance and Freeze?

Absolutely! You can assemble it ahead of time and refrigerate it until ready to eat. You can also make this casserole ahead of time and freeze it for later. If baking from frozen, let the casserole thaw completely in the refrigerator and then bake as below. You can also freeze the leftovers for a quick side dish later. Just thaw and reheat in the microwave.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. Lightly spray a 9×9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  • Combine chopped broccoli, cream of mushroom soup, French onion dip, 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese and ½ of the French fried onions.
  • Spread broccoli mixture into prepared pan.
  • Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven, top with remaining cheese and onions. Bake an additional 5 minutes.

Notes:

5 containers of french onion dip
  • Make sure to use sour cream French onion dip such as Dean’s, Great Value, Barber’s, Heluva Good Dip, or Kraft.
  • If you can’t find the sour cream dip, you can substitute sour cream and a few tablespoons of onion soup mix.
  • I suggest using Unsalted Cream of Mushroom Soup in this dish to control the sodium.
  • You can assemble the casserole in advance and refrigerate or freeze for later.
  • To bake after freezing, thaw completely and bake as directed.

  1. This was amazing! My husband doesn’t like onions and he raved about this dish. I will be making this often, so glad I found this recipe. I didn’t see any mention in the recipe about cooking the broccoli first, but I did steam my broccoli before I mixed it with all the ingredients.

  2. And I also added rotisserie chicken! I served it the first night with a salad, and the second night with beets. Comfort food!

  3. Delicious. And easy. This recipe is so easy to tweek. I didn’t have the onion dip so I subbed with sour cream, a little onion soup mix and some dried minced onion. I also added a bit of heavy cream (no more than a quarter cup). And I used GV Fiesta shredded cheese and cream of chicken soup. Here’s the point: It’s a very forgiving recipe, and it’s delicious. The cannister of French Fried Onions, however, is a must!!! I love this recipe!!!

  4. Does the fresh brocoli release water while cooking? I had to eyeball the amount of broccoli cut up because the bagged broccoli was sold out. I feel like it looks a little dry and wondering if I should add more dip and soup.

    1. I didn’t cook the fresh broccoli prior to adding it to the casserole, so I wouldn’t think so. It just depends on how soft you like your broccoli.

  5. so good, made it for women’s ministry potluck and they cleaned it out good. nothing left. easy to make and a good way to use up onion dip when you run out of chips. I will definitely make it again.

  6. This is delicious and easy to make! I made it at Christmas, and the family raved about it. I just made it again tonight, I added the breasts of a rotisserie chicken to it. IT IS AMAZING. The chicken added some protein and made it a 1 pan meal for the family!

  7. This is an amazing side dish! A lot of people make green bean casserole this time of year and although I do love the classic green bean casserole, THIS dish is better and a great alternative if you don’t like green beans (like my son) or if you are just plain tired of the classic dish. Everyone here loved this. I used frozen cut broccoli instead of fresh because it’s what I had available. I just let it thaw and was sure to drain it before adding it to the casserole. If you use frozen, I do not recommend steaming it first. Just thaw it and drain it well. This way, your broccoli will not end up mushy and over cooked.

  8. I love your recipes, but I would like to know why my email address was dropped from your list. I had to subscribe under my other email address. Please contact me & let me know why this happened.

  9. This is the first review I have ever given Plain Chicken. This was delicious! I made no changes. I may try to make it a main dish next time and add some boneless skinless chicken… Thank you for so many great, simple recipes! ❤️

  10. Do you think you could use green beans instead of broccoli? Looks like this could replace the traditional holiday green bean casserole! Thanks!

      1. Can you double the recipe and, if so would you use a 9×13 pan? As long, if adding chicken diced chicken shouldn’t be cooked first?

        1. Yes, you can double it in a 9×13-inch pan. I would use cooked chicken if adding chicken to the dish.

  11. I love all your onion dip recipes. I have made the stroganoff several times. I’m not a fan of the traditional green bean casserole. Could you take this recipe and switch broccoli for green beans? How many cans of green beans would I need? Thanks!

    1. I’m sure that would work fine. It would be up to you on how many cans. I would say probably 2 or 3 at the most.

  12. This was a fantastic recipe. Do not be afraid of the French Onion dip overpowering the recipe. Try it, you will not be sorry!

  13. I wanted to make this recipe, but didn’t have any dip. But I had dry onion soup mix and sour cream. So I made my own dip. Love this casserole. So easy to divide into smaller portions and free for later.
Yummy! Thanks for all of your great recipes.

  14. Hi, I love your blog and have been following it for years. We are a military family and recently moved to Germany. Our commissary doesn’t have ANY refrigerated chip dips (so sad)! What would you recommend using instead? Regular sour cream? The chip aisle dip in a jar? I’d appreciate any thoughts you might have. Thank you!

  15. What about using frozen broccoli? I notice a couple of people have asked, but I don’t see where you have answered!

  16. I made this tonight and added some shredded chicken to make it a meal instead of a side dish. Oh my gosh it's amazing! So easy to make. Thank you!

  17. Is it frozen or fresh broccoli? Can it be made in A 13×9 dish ? If so how would you adjust the cooking?

  18. Made this this weekend and it was wonderful, everyone loved it. Thanks for sharing!!!!!
