Stop what you are doing and add this French Onion Chicken and Rice Bake to your menu tonight! I am totally obsessed with this casserole! It is super simple to make; especially if you use rotisserie chicken. It took 5 minutes to whip together and it was on the table in about 20 minutes!

As I’ve said before, I love Kraft French Onion dip. Make sure to use your favorite brand of refrigerated French Onion dip in this recipe since that gives the dish a lot of flavors. We absolutely LOVED this casserole. I ate way too much of this! We ate the leftovers for lunch the next day and it was equally delicious.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. Spray a 9×13-inch pan with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil. Add instant rice, cover and turn off heat. Allow to stand for 5 minutes, until all water is absorbed.
  • In a large bowl, combine chicken, chicken soup, French onion dip, cheddar cheese, chicken broth and cooked rice. Spread into prepared pan. Top with French Fried Onions.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes:

  • Can substitute 4 cups of any cooked rice for the minute rice and water.
  • Can make in advance and refrigerate or freeze for later.
  • To bake after freezing, thaw completely and bake as directed above.
  • 5 containers of french onion dipThis recipe uses refrigerated sour cream French onion dip such as Helluva Good Dip, Dean’s Dip, Kraft Dip, or Barber’s Dip. Walmart also sells a Great Value refrigerated French Onion Dip.
  • If you can’t find the dip, substitute sour cream and a tablespoon of onion soup mix.
  • I suggest using Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup in this dish to control the sodium.

  1. I can’t remember if I left a review previously but this is such good comfort food. We double this, there are five of us, and it’s normally gone by the next night. Some of us might have even had it for breakfast ;). I always add more cheese on top prior to baking and we add the French fried onions after baking because we like them crispy crunchy.

  2. I cook some broccoli till just crispy and add the broccoli to the layers of the dish, then you have a green vegetable to go with dinner..

  3. I would rather not use the can of soup, what can I use in place of it? Also would the nutritional info on your recipes…

  4. I tried this and it was absolutely delicious. My boyfriend couldn’t stop complimenting me. I didn’t use the quick rice, I used the 15 min rice. The rice didn’t taste completely done, but when it baked, it helped it by cooking longer then it taste just right. Definitely going to make this again. 🙂

  5. I had some leftover fried chicken, 3 large breasts which was a little more than 2 cups when cut up and found this recipe while looking for a way to use it. I wanted something a little different than the usual chicken and rice. I didn’t have the dip but the sour cream and Lipton onion soup mix worked great. I also use Campbell’s Cream of Chicken and Mushroom soup (in all recipes calling for one or the other). I put a little bit more cheese and a few more FF onions on top. I will definitely be making this again! My husband loved it!

  6. Can I put everything in a pan and bake for about an hour? Uncooked rice with extra water/broth and raw chicken? Looking for a one dish meal.

    1. Made this and it was delicious. I followed the directions and used a shredded rotisserie chicken. I did add a can of mushrooms drained. Will definitely make this again. Thank you.

  7. I didn’t read the recipe closely that’s for sure. I used French Onion Dip straight up and didn’t see the notes until later. I also mixed brown & white rice (trying to clear the cabinets out of old ingredients). Added a red pepper that needed to be used. Turned out great.

  8. If I use non- instant rice do I need more liquid and if so how much and should I cook it longer?

Quick answer would be appreciated I would like to make this tonight!

    1. I have only made this as written. Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.

    2. I didn’t use the quick rice. I did add more water and cooked it for 15 minutes like it said on the rice bag. I had it set a couple minutes longer, didn’t taste completely done but baking it in the oven for 22 min, make the rice done and it came out perfect.
