How to Make French Onion Chicken Casserole
This casserole is SUPER easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. I had this casserole assembled and ready to bake before the oven had preheated. The hardest part of the whole recipe is having the self-control not to eat all the yummy fried onions before putting them on the casserole. LOL!
To make the casserole combine cooked chicken, cream of chicken soup, cheddar cheese, and french onion dip. Spread the chicken mixture in a baking dish, top with some fried onions and bake.
- I used a rotisserie chicken in this recipe. Rotisserie chicken is a great time saver. I use it in all of my chicken casseroles.
- For the french onion dip, it is important to use a container for a refrigerated sour cream dip in this recipe. Look for Kraft, Barber’s, Dean’s, or Heluva Good Dip.
- If you can’t find the sour cream dip, you can substitute sour cream and some onion soup mix.
- Can chicken casserole be made in advance? Yes! You can assemble the casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it overnight. You may need to add a few minutes to the cooking time if baking straight from the refrigerator.
- Can chicken casserole be frozen? Yes! You can assemble the casserole ahead of time and freeze the casserole unbaked for later. To bake after freezing, thaw completely and bake as directed below.
- You can also freeze the baked casserole. To reheat after freezing, thaw the casserole. Cover casserole with aluminum foil. Bake at 350ºF for 30 to 45 minutes, until warm.

Could I add rice to this? If so should I add it already cooked or uncooked and let it cook in the oven? Would I need to add a bit more liquid?
Here is the version with rice: https://www.plainchicken.com/french-onion-chicken-and-rice-bake/
Can I add egg noodles?
I plan on doubling the recipe and putting it in a 13 x 9. How long should I bake it? Thank you!!
I am not sure. I would check it at 40 minutes and see if it is warm and bubbly.
Why do you need to use cooked chicken? Seems like that would be long enough to use raw.
Make it however you want, Belinda.
Looks just like my grandma ‘s chicken casserole but hers had stuffing ,instead of cheese . I’m trying it out today just the same ,cooking my chicken as we speak 😂,don’t forget if you cook your own chicken you’ll have all that great chicken stock to toss some homemade noodles in .
Can I use chicken thighs and cook them I can’t have chicken with skin?? Jean
Any cooked chicken works fine in this casserole.
Can you freeze this recipe?
Yes – you can assemble the casserole and freeze it for later. To bake after freezing, thaw completely and bake as directed above.
I have made this recipe and my family loves it! Was wondering if this could be made in a crock pot and how you would do it? Without AC, I am loathe to turn on my oven and am looking for something to please everyone. Thanks!
I think this would be just fine in the slow cooker.
Would I have to mix everything together is I did it in the crockpot or cook chicken, shred it, then put everything in the crockpot? I prefer cooking in the crockpot due to timing and busy schedules.
