How to Make French Onion Chicken Roll Ups

This casserole is very easy to make. In a medium bowl, stir together shredded chicken, sour cream french onion dip, cheddar cheese, and french fried onions. Separate crescent rolls into triangles. Scoop a spoonful of the chicken mixture onto the wide end of the triangle and roll up. Place the rolls in a baking dish and bake for a few minutes, until the rolls start to turn golden brown. Remove the dish from the oven. Whisk together the cream of chicken soup and milk or chicken broth. Pour sauce over the rolls and sprinkle with french fried onions. Bake until the casserole is bubbly.

Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • Make sure to use a refrigerated sour cream-based french onion dip such as Dean’s, Great Value, Barber’s, Heluva Good Dip, or Kraft. DO NOT use a jarred french onion dip from the chip aisle.
  • If you can’t find sour cream dip, you can use an equivalent amount of sour cream with some Lipton’s onion soup mix mixed in.
  • I used a rotisserie chicken for the cooked chicken in the casserole. You can use any cooked chicken that you have on hand. Chicken breasts, chicken, things, chicken tenderloins, or canned chicken. This is a great recipe to use up leftover chicken.
  • You can use any can of cream of soup that you have on hand. Cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, and cream of celery all work great.
  • Can Chicken Roll Ups be made in advance? Yes. You can assemble the rolls ahead of time and refrigerate overnight. I prefer to prepare the chicken mixture the night before and assemble the rolls while the oven preheats. I think the rolls rise more in the oven when baked immediately after removing them from the can.
  • Can Chicken Roll Up be frozen? Yes! Bake the casserole and let it cool completely. Cover the baking dishwith plastic wrap and foil and place in the freezer. The casserole will keep up to 3 months in the freezer.
    • To reheat the casserole after freezing, thaw, cover with foil and reheat in the oven at 350ºF until warm or reheat in the microwave.

Comments

  1. Looks good!! Do i have to use the soup and milk? Wouldn’t they still be yummers eating by hand?

  2. Made the french onion chicken rollups tonight for dinner. The only thing I did different, was used onion rings that were garlic and pepper flavored. This added another layer of flavor, that we thought was great. I only used 1 can of crescent rolls and froze the rest of the chicken mixture for another day. I did use most of the cream of chicken soup + 1/2 cup milk with only a little left over. I used all of the onion rings and cheese. There are only 2 of us, so this was a LOT of food. Together we ate 3 of the rollups with 5 left over. This would be a great dish for company!! 5 stars!!!
