How to Make Ham & Cheese Braid
This dish is effortless to make with only four simple ingredients. Roll a can of crescent rolls out on a cookie sheet lined with a piece of parchment paper and press all the seams together. Using a sharp knife, cut 10 slits on the long sides of the rectangle – leave the middle of the dough uncut. In a medium bowl, combine the diced ham, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, and honey mustard dressing. Spread it down the middle of the crescent roll dough. Pull the dough strips over the ham mixture and bake in a preheated oven until golden brown. Sprinkle with parsley.
Helpful Tips & Frequently Asked Questions
- You can use regular crescent rolls or refrigerated crescent dough sheets.

- Variations/Additions:
- green onions
- red pepper
- bell peppers
- mozzarella cheese
- provolone cheese
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
What to Serve with Hot Ham & Cheese Sandwiches
Let’s talk about what side dishes to serve to make your meal truly spectacular. First off, consider serving it up with a crisp and refreshing mixed greens salad drizzled with a zesty vinaigrette. The brightness of the salad perfectly complements the rich and savory flavors of the braid. For an extra touch of indulgence, whip up a batch of creamy potato salad or a side of roasted veggies with garlic and herbs. And let’s not forget about some creamy cheesy pasta noodles or sautéed mushrooms. With these fantastic options, you’ll create a well-rounded and delightful meal that’ll have everyone savoring every last bite of that delectable braid!

- Roll out crescent rolls vertically on baking sheet, do not separate and seal perforations.
- Mix ham, cheese and mustard. Spread ham down center of crescent rolls.

At what point, if at all, can you freeze this?
It is best to freeze after baking.
Loved this! Didn’t have honey mustard dressing on hand, so made a mix of mayo and honey mustard. It was perfect. While eating, it was suggested by my daughter that this would be a great breakfast braid with the addition of scrambled eggs.
I made this and everyone loved it
I basically understand the braiding except for “twisting each strip on turn.” Would you please clarify?
Thanks!
I, too, didn’t understand that. I looked numerous times at the photos and did it how I thought it meant. I’ve made this many times. When you’re pulling up to strips over the ham and cheese, when both sides meet at the top give the dough a small turn of your fingers. Sort of putting hair into a ponytail and you twist the band to be able to make it tighter. Weird explanation, I know! It’s the only way I describe it to others when I share this menu.
We don't care for honey mustard either…so we used pesto on the first one and Dijon mustard on the second one.
BOTH were super yummy!!!
I'm thinking pizza sauce, ham, pineapple and cream cheese…. mmmmm….
This will be for dinner tonight. Looks good! Thinking of adding swiss!
as long as it tasted good, that is all that matters!
My 'braid' didn't turn out as pretty as yours LOL
I think I will try it with a sheet of puff pastry instead of crescent dough.
YUM! So festive looking, too! Happy New Year Stephanie!!!
Ranch sounds awesome! I saw someone use cream cheese too but I think I'll use fat free ranch to try to keep it semi healthy ish 😉 haha
This was a winner at our house. I need to tweak my oven a bit to get the bottom to crisp up, but we'll definitely have this again!
i just kept the honey mustard out and made it without it and then used the ranch to dip into it…my kids like to dip. lol turned out awesome!!!
So how did the ranch version turn out? My son doesn't like honey mustard so I need an alternate. This looks so good – I HAVE to make it!
very true Steph…making it tonight. 🙂
I don't see why not! Isn't everything better with ranch?!
wonder if this would work with ranch?
