Fluffy

Last week, Fluffy crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. She has been in poor health for a few years, and last Tuesday night she started having trouble walking and went down hill fast. We set her free on Wednesday. We knew this day was coming, but our hearts are still shattered.
Fluffy actually adopted us. She was a stray.
Fluffy started showing up in our back yard in 2008. She would sit in the yard and watch the birds at the bird feeder and then sit in the catnip we had planted outside. When it got dark, she would leave. We just assumed she was going home.
Fast forward several months, she was sitting outside our front door looking inside. She was really skinny, and I realized that she didn’t have a home. My heart broke. I got a bowl of food and put it out for her. Chicken Legs was out of town at the time. I called him and told him that Fluffy didn’t have a home. He said to give her some food. I told him that I already did. We are suckers. If you know anything about cats, you know that we adopted her right then.
Fluffy stayed outside for a few years. We had an old cat, Marmalade, and she couldn’t take another cat inside the house. Jack was already too much for her.
Fluffy had a great setup in the garage. A bed and a heater for the cold weather. We would shut the door at night and let her out in the mornings. She loved to hang out in the garage and watch the neighborhood happenings.
After Marmalade passed away, we took Fluffy to the vet to get checked out. She got a clean bill of health (not even any fleas), and we brought her inside.
She was mad at me for a little while for taking her to the vet, but she eventually got over it and made herself at home.
Fluffy loved drinking water. She would just sit next to her water bowl and enjoy herself for hours. She loved drinking water out of the shower. Every time we walked in the bathroom, we had to turn on the shower for her so she could drink water off the floor.

Fluffy was a soft spoken cat – EXCEPT when she screamed at the top of her little lungs at 4AM. Almost every single night. It was annoying, but it was Fluffy. We learned to deal with it.

Fluffy got SUPER skinny over the past few years despite the fact that she ate ALL the time.
OMG! Every time I turned around she wanted food. She loved rotisserie chicken, fresh cooked ground beef and stinky canned food.

Fluffy loved being outside. She used to try and get out whenever we opened the door. As she got older, she quit trying to escape. LOL! The screened in porch was one of her favorite places to nap. She also LOVED going on car rides. SO crazy, but she just loved getting out in the car.
We were SO lucky that Fluffy chose us to be her cat parents.
We couldn’t have asked for a sweeter more loving cat.
I am going to miss her coming in my office every morning for pets, prancing around the house, asking me to turn on the shower and asking me for food all day long. I’m pretty sure I’m still going to wake up at 4AM because she trained me over the past 10 years to get up at that time. LOL!
We are missing Fluffy terribly.
We are taking comfort in knowing that we gave her a loving and safe home.
We always said she went from the outhouse to the penthouse.
We know that she lived her best life!
She will be in our hearts forever.

  1. We are so sorry to hear about Miss Fluffy. I have always heard that animals adopt us. We have a tortoise shell kitty just like your Fluffy, who came into our lives from out of nowhere. We named her Spirit and she has been the light that we needed at a difficult time in our lives. Fluffy chose the perfect pet parents and had a good life. Rest in peace Miss Fluffy.

  2. Tears in my eyes. Deepest condolences.
Fluffy is one of a kind with her unique marking and personalities with you and your family.
It is a good feeling for Fluffy knowing that she was loved.

  3. My heart breaks for you and your family. I told you once before how much she looked like my Fancy and Jack like my Rowdy. I know they have welcomed her with playful hearts and loving kindness because they have both crossed over as well. I miss them so much and I still looking for the right ones to adopt me!

  4. I am so very sorry for the loss of your precious Fluffy! Such a sweet beautiful face! She reminds me so much of my long-haired Torti, Sarabi. It's easy to see how much you love your fur-babies. I wish you healing for your heart and many wonderful memories!

  5. My heart is breaking for you. I know how hard it is to lose a fur baby, and Fluffy was so lucky to have you guys for cat parents. I truly believe that we will see our pets again some day, and I hope that Jack, Squeaky, and Nacho Man Kitty Savage give you comfort during this time.

  6. So so sorry for the loss of this beautiful girl. Your photos are so lovely. Only thing wrong with having pets is that we outlast them! Love to Jack and Squeak and new guy, but especially Jack…

  7. My heart aches for you. I know the hurt of losing your fur baby- they adopt you and then they leave and and the hole in your heart never seems to heal. My daughter just rescued a tortoise shell who is a double for your Fluffy. We couldn’t believe she’s has my daughters birthday- I know it wasn’t our first fur baby, Aimee, sending her to my daughter. They are amazing creatures. Reading this story made me realize how lucky we are when they choose us

  8. Had a maincoon cat that walked in and let me live with her for 20 years. She took my heart when she passed. Then I adopted 2 more cats from humane society. It's been a wild ride being trained by my cats. I'm a jumping board at 3am and I love it. Love your story.

    1. 12. I am so very sorry for your loss. It is so hard to say goodbye to our feline friends. But it's hopefully just for a while and we will be reunited one day. Fluffy sounds like a such a blessing to you and your husband as you were to her. God's speed, Fluffy!
