How to Make Mississippi Chicken Noodle Soup

This soup is effortless to make with only a few simple ingredients. Place chicken breasts in the bottom of a 6-qt. slow cooker. Add a packet of Au Jus Gravy mix, chicken broth, ranch dressing mix, carrots, celery, jarred pepperoncini peppers, and some pepper juice. Cover the crockpot and cook on LOW for 6 hours. Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and shred with two forks. Add the shredded chicken back to the crock pot and add uncooked egg noodles. Cook for 15 to 30 minutes, or until the noodles are soft.

Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • I used boneless skinless chicken breasts. You can substitute chicken tenderloins or boneless chicken thighs if you prefer.
  • Here is our recipe for Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix: https://www.plainchicken.com/homemade-ranch-dressing-mix/
  • I suggest using low-sodium or no-salt chicken broth, especially if you use store-bought ranch dressing mix.
  • Can I cook chicken soup on HIGH? Yes! You can cook this soup on HIGH for 3 hours, or until the chicken is cooked.
  • Can I make Mississippi Chicken Noodle Soup on the stovetop? Yes! Add all the ingredients to a Dutch oven. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer until the chicken breasts are cooked. Shread the chicken with two forks, add the noodles and boil until the noodles are cooked.
  • Can I use rotisserie chicken instead of raw chicken? Yes! Feel free to substitute shredded rotisserie chicken meat. This is great for when you want to make this soup on the stovetop!
    • You will need about 3 or 4 cups of chicken.
  • Can I freeze chicken noodle soup? Yes! You can freeze the leftovers for later. Thaw and reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave. You will need to add some more chicken broth when reheating. The noodles will absorb the broth after sitting in the refrigerator or freezer.
    • If making this exclusively to freeze, leave out the noodles and add them when you reheat the soup.

  1. This was absolutely amazing! I added 8oz of dairy free cream cheese and instead of a soup, it made a creamy chicken & noodle dish instead. So delicious, even my husband ate 2 servings! This will be in heavy rotation!!

  2. I am fixing this soup for the second time now! I absolutely love it. I didn’t even know that I liked pepperocinis lol. It was a little salty, but I added some water and that solved the problem.
Thanks for sharing this recipe! Plain chicken is one of the regular websites I go to for recipes. I have fixed many of your recipes and love them all!

  3. I love this recipe! Thank you so much. I did have some extra broth on hand because the noodles soaked a lot of it up…thank you for adding that tip.

  4. Hi
I only have a pack of regular gravy mix. Will that work or should I make a trip to the store? Thanks for all you do! 🙂

    1. Regular gravy and au jus gravy mix are not the same things. It will change the soup. You can try it, but it won’t look or taste like the photos.

    1. I am sure that you can. I have not made this in the instant pot, so I can not tell you the cooking time.
