Monte Cristo Sandwich

This is another great meal courtesy of our Christmas ham.  We made these Monte Cristo Sandwiches for lunch last weekend.  This was my first Monte Cristo sandwich and it was delicious!  French toast, ham and swiss cheese – what’s not to like?! If I had known how easy it was to make, I would have made is sooner.  This sandwich would be good for breakfast, lunch or dinner.  We can’t wait to have this again.

Monte Cristo Sandwich
adapted from Martha Stewart
(Printable Recipe)

honey mustard
8 slices country bread
Swiss cheese slices
Honey-Baked Ham
4 large eggs
½ cup milk
¼ tsp pepper
⅛ tsp ground nutmeg
4 Tbsp butter

Spread mustard on bread. Layer 4 bread slices with Swiss cheese, ham, and cheese again. Place remaining bread slices on top.

In a shallow dish or pie plate, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Dip each sandwich in the egg mixture, turning to coat well.

In a large skillet, melt half the butter over medium-low heat. When butter is foamy, add two sandwiches, and cook, turning once, until golden brown on both sides, 6 to 8 minutes total. Repeat with remaining sandwiches. Serve immediately.

  1. I've never had a Monte Cristo sandwich that wasn't Ham, Turkey and Swiss Cheese. I wonder if I'd like it better leaving off the turkey?

  2. OMG YOU ARE SO EVIL…lol….I should not have looked at your blog when I was A) Hungry and, B) making out my grocery list. So we are totally having this for dinner tomorrow 🙂

I love your blog! I have been lurking (and cooking!) for awhile and have not have one thing that was not wonderful 🙂

    Have a great evening!

  3. Made this recipe last night and it was great………Hubby loved it too…………I had some Italian bread on hand so smaller then county bread but was so delish………..made 2 for each of us…..pigs huh?

  4. I grew up eating these. My grandmother got this recipe from the restaurant she worked for. I make them for my family all the time. Everyone loves them! Brown sugar ham is just as delicious.

  5. Sarah – cook it slow and you will see the egg mixture cook. You can tell by looking at it – you won't be able to see any of the egg mixture when it is done. It will just be golden goodness.

  6. Haven't had one in a while but we do love these. We like to serve ours with a raspberry jam syrup for dipping because the first one I ever had came that way.

You're making great use of that ham. Got a soup lined up for the ham bone?

  7. I love Theses Sandwiches! They are also great with a very light dusting of powdered sugar on them, and then dip them bite by bite in raspberry jam! …It sounds strange, but that's how they were served in a restaurant, and it was delicious! 🙂

  8. I've never had one either but have to agree with your comment – "French toast, ham and swiss cheese – what's not to like?"
