How to Make Baked Tortellini and Sausage
This pasta casserole is effortless to make with only six simple ingredients. In a large skillet, cook Italian sausage over medium-high heat until no longer pink. Drain excess grease. In a bowl, stir together spaghetti sauce, water, frozen cheese tortellini pasta, and cooked sausage. Spray a 9×13-inch pan with nonstick spray. Transfer the tortellini mixture to the prepared baking dish. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven until the pasta is tender. Remove the tin foil and sprinkle the top of the casserole with mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese. Bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted. Garnish the pasta with fresh parsley.
- Can substitute ground turkey or ground beef.
- Can use pork breakfast sausage instead of Italian sausage.
- Omit sausage for a vegetarian dish.
- My favorite store-bought spaghetti sauces are Trader Joe’s Roasted Garlic Marinara Sauce (green label), Rao’s, Carbone, and La Famiglia DelGrosso.
- There is no need to thaw the frozen tortellini.
- I use cheese tortellini. You can use any flavor of tortellini you prefer. Spinach tortellini is delicious.
- Feel free to add some fresh herbs and fresh spinach to the tortellini mixture.
- Can I freeze Baked Tortellini? Yes. Bake the pasta and cool completely. Cover the casserole dish with plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 3 months.
- To reheat, thaw and baked covered in the oven until hot throughout.
- For easy meal prep, divide pasta into individual portions and freeze them in a freezer-safe container. Perfect for school lunches.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

could you use jarred alfredo sauce in place of the pasta sauce?
I’ve never tried this recipe with Alfredo sauce. Unfortunately, without further recipe testing, I cannot answer with certainty. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications.
Could you make this as a freezer meal? Just thaw before cooking?
I’ve never made this as a freezer meal. Not sure how the pasta would turn out with all the extra water. You can certainly try it. I would recommend thawing before baking.
Would refrigerated tortellini work, maybe with a shorter cook time? Or should I freeze them first?
I haven't tried this with the refrigerated tortellini. If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out. Enjoy!
Sooooo delicious and so quick to throw together! Love it! My family absolutely loves cheese filled pasta, and therefore really enjoyed this dish, as did I. On a busy weeknight, it just doesn't get any easier than this. LOVE these no-boil recipes.
Sounds so yummy!! I wonder, could I make this in the crock pot (obviously brown the ground meat first)?
Yes. I think it would work. Let me know how it turns out!
would frozen ravioli work as well? Large or small?
would frozen ravioli work as well? Small raviolis rather than large?
I think small frozen ravioli would work fine. Enjoy!
Sorry to seem an idiot but I am from South Africa, although we do use and have the same kind of ingredients, we just use different names for it so I often look for the meaning on the net this time what is Tortellini is it cheese or pasta.Thank you for a great blog, I really enjoy it as I love food and cooking and as I am now a cripple after a stroke I have all the time to look at new ideas and I have also written a cook book but not published yet as I do not have the funds to have it printed.
It is a cheese filed pasta. Enjoy!
What is this, 1 lb sausage, cooked and crumbled? 🙂
Would the tortellini need to be thawed or is the cook time frozen?
Jim – I cooked the tortellini frozen.
I made this with hamburger – it was really good!
If you were to add spinach, would you suggest cooking/wilting fresh or just adding it uncooked?
I would just add in uncooked…. It will turn out well… that's how I do it when I bake my lazy lasagna… hope that helps
If you were to add spinach to this, would you suggest wilting fresh before adding or just using fresh (uncooked) spinach?
Looks really good! What kind of tortellini did you use?
