Classic Pie Recipe

Apple Pie is a classic American dessert. This recipe comes from a Plain Chicken reader. This recipe is her mother’s recipe. It is a very simple recipe but a very delicious recipe! We have made this several times and it has quickly become a favorite at our house. It is hard to beat a warm slice of pie topped with ice cream and caramel sauce. YUM!

How to Make Old Fashioned Apple Pie from Scratch

As I said, this is a very simple recipe. Start with two store-bought or homemade pie crusts. Press one pie crust into a pie plate. Next, make the filling. Combine canned apple slices, flour, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Spread the apple mixture on top of the crust. Top the pie with the second crust and bake.

I like to brush the crust with melted butter and sugar before baking. This gives the crust a nice crunch. Please note this recipe uses canned apple slices not apple pie filling. I used Lucky Leaf apple slices. I bought them at Walmart.

You can make the pie ahead of time and refrigerate overnight. I usually bake it the day before serving so the filling has time to set up.

Grandmama’s Apple Pie

This Old-Fashioned Apple Pie is the perfect ending to any meal! It is great for summer cookouts, potlucks, and the holidays. We like to serve the pie slightly warm with ice cream. It is also great topped with whipped cream. I’ve heard of people topping apple pie with cheese, but I don’t know about that!

  1. I made this as a reduced sugar version and it is excellent. I didn’t drain the apples as they had so little liquid. The spices and flour were loosely measured to compensate for any extra liquid. I’d say shy of heaping would be the best description. I premixed them before adding to the apples. Also I used Splenda and Truvia brown sugar for sweetners all in a deep dish pie pan.
