How to Make Oreo Buttercream Frosting

This frosting is very easy to make. Start with crushing Oreo cookies in a food processor until very fine. Set them aside. In the bowl on an electric stand mixer, beat butter until smooth and creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes. With the mixer on low speed, add powdered sugar, crushed oreo cookies, whipping cream, and vanilla; mix until light and fluffy.

  • Can substitute milk for the heavy cream in the frosting.
  • I crushed my cookies in the food processor until they were the consistency of sand.
  • We like a lot of Oreo’s in the frosting. Feel free to use more or less depending on your family’s preferences. You may need to add more powdered sugar or heavy cream depending on your desired consistency.
  • Can use gluten-free Oreo cookies for a gluten-free frosting.
  • Buttercream frosting can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 1 week. Let it come to room temperature then re-whip with an electric mixer until light and fluffy again before frosting the cake.
  • You can use this frosting on any type of cake that you prefer – sheet cake, layer cake, or cupcakes.
  • I used original Oreo cookies. Feel free to use any flavor you enjoy.
  • I used Cake Tip #827 to pipe the frosting on top of the cupcakes.

Easy Homemade Frosting for Cakes & Cookies

  1. Question: When Crushing Oreos, do you remove the white filling first or do you process the whole
    cookie?

  2. Gave it a 5 star without even tasting it. What’s not to like?? First of all my favorite frosting is buttercream, 2 nd of all Oreos are my favorite store bought cookie. Once again what’s not to like. I’m surprised that I never thought about it. It will be made this weekend for sure.
