How to Make BBQ Meatballs Recipe

These meatballs are super easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, combine lean ground beef, quick oats, milk, onion, Montreal steak seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Roll the meatball mixture into small balls. Place the meatballs on a baking sheet and place them in the freezer for 10 minutes.

In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of canola oil over medium-high heat. Brown the frozen meatballs on the stove top until just brown. Place meatballs into an oven-safe skillet or baking dish. In a medium bowl, whisk together ketchup, sugar, white vinegar, onion, Worcestershire sauce, and a dash of hot sauce. Spoon the sauce over the partially cooked meatballs. Place the baking dish in the oven and bake. Garnish the meatballs with some parsley or green onions.

Helpful Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can substitute ground pork or ground turkey.
  • The meat mixture is very soft. You need to refrigerate or freeze the meatballs for a few minutes before browning and baking. I got 26 medium meatballs. You may get a few more or a few less depending on how big you make your meatballs.
  • I made a homemade bbq sauce to go on top of the meatballs. You can substitute an equal amount of your favorite store-bought barbecue sauce.
  • My favorite brand of store-bought bbq sauce is Sweet Baby Rays.
  • For a spicy sauce, substitute Heinz chili sauce for the ketchup and add some red pepper flakes.
  • If you don’t have an oven safe skillet, bake the meatballs on a baking sheet or in a baking dish.
  • Can I make meatballs in the crock pot? Yes! Brown the meatballs and place them in the slow cooker. Spoon the sauce over the meatballs and cook on LOW heat for 2 to 4 hours.
  • Store leftover meatballs in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
