The 4th of July is next week, and these Quick Chili Cheese Dogs are going to be our menu. This is a super quick recipe and tastes fantastic. The homemade chili is good enough to stand on its own, but it really puts the hot dogs over the top. I get hungry just thinking about these yummy chili dogs! All you need is some baked beans and coleslaw and you are set!
How to Make Homemade Hot Dog Chili
This hot dog chili is very easy to make. In a large skillet, cook ground chuck until browned. Drain fat. Add onion flakes and garlic. Cook until fragrant, 30 seconds. Stir in tomato sauce, chili powder, salt, pepper, and water. Bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat. Simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve the chili over hotdogs and top with cheese and green onions.
- Can substitute ground turkey or ground chicken for the ground beef in this recipe.
- The chili can be made ahead of time and reheated in the microwave or the stove when you are ready to assemble these chili dogs.
- Can use any flavor of hot dogs or bratwurst that you prefer.
- Can Hot Dog Chili be frozen? Absolutely! Let the chili cool completely and transfer to a freezer bag or plastic container and freeze. When ready to serve, thaw and reheat in the microwave or the stove.
What to Serve with Chili Dogs
These chili dogs are slightly messy. Make sure you have plenty of napkins handy! And please don’t be wearing white while you are eating these!! We usually serve these with some coleslaw, chips, and baked beans. If you have any leftover chili, it is great on a burger, nachos, or a baked potato! Give this recipe a try ASAP! - 2 Tbsp dried minced onion flakes
- 1 garlic clove crushed
- 2 (8 oz) cans tomato sauce
- 2 Tbsp chili powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp pepper
- 1 cup water
- 8 hot dogs, cooked
- 8 hot dogs buns
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- chopped green onions
Instructions:
